Irena Sendler

I had never heard of this wonderful woman until
today. I read her story, cried mostly. But fell in
love nonetheless. As I stared at her picture, I thought
to myself, I hope that someday, I can be as beautiful
as she is, I love her smile.
I would also hope to be as brave. I have always
loved Corrie Ten Boom and read all of her books
every summer. Now I have some one else to read
about. I am sure there was lots of rejoicing on the day
she went to heaven. I always love stories of "Righteous Gentiles."
Irena Sendler
There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena.
During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.
She had an 'ulterior motive'.
She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews (being German).
Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids).
She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.
The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.
After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family.
Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.
Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize.
She was not selected.
Al Gore won --- for a slide show on Global Warming.

amazing in two ways: first that this very brave woman saved so many lives.

secondly: the truly blindness - and political bias - of the NPP committee sometimes. uh, where was global warming this winter?

thank you for sharing her incredible story.

Wow, what a story! I'll think about that all day.

Well, that, and the picture of the girl with four legs that Pioneer Woman posted. *shudder*

Wow, what an amazing story. Stories like that give me shivers.

And Al Gore can kiss my butt. ):(

The part I didn't write was she was standing before the firing squad about to be killed, when at the last minute a guard was bribed and she was let go. They hurt her so bad when they beat her she suffered the rest of her life. I just loved her story.

Not the beating part but that she continued in spite of the pain to be this giving, compassionate woman.
