October Days

With all of the excitement of this week, I went outside the other
day and I was mad at myself for missing these beautiful fall days.
The air smells so crisp and brown. In California we might not
have all of the colors that are so vibrant, but we do have lovely
browns and golds, and yellows and yes, even some reds. The smell
of the grass that is turning from green to brown smells like hay all
crispy.

As I sat outside and the peace of the day gave me such comfort. Like that poem
The Day is Done, by Longfellow.

And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares, that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,
And as silently steal away.

In October is seems as if the sunrises become filled with color.
I also think the sun gets more and more reluctant to rise each
morning and keeps the blanket's of clouds tucked around his
neck.
In the evening, the sun seems in a hurry to leave the sky
and return to the place where the winds live. Each evening as
I sit and watch as the light goes out in the sky, twilight becomes
filled with magic, and I notice that the fairy's seem to be hiding
in other places that I can't see.

I love October, my thoughts of October are filled with dreams of days gone by.
I think of November as brown and cold and dark. I find in
November I panic as the days are sometimes as dark as the
nights, so I burn fires to keep the ghosts at bay.

Now enough of this, I have a chicken pen to clean.
Have a lovely weekend my dear friends.

I love October too. In Florida we don't get too many of the colors, especially in South Florida where we live, but I've visited up north in autumn many times, once was all it took to forever fall in love with autumn.
Thank you for sharing.

ohhhh, I love this post...your thoughts are indeed vibrant and alive! I love the huge sun behind me as I drive to work each a.m.

We'll sail through November, so no fears.

Yes,I love Oct, too. The crisp air and the colors changing. So, grateful our temps have cooled! No interest in house, but with the baby coming...I don't really care! :-) May take it off the market next month and wait til the spring to re-list it. Maybe I'll convince the hubby to just add on and stay here! ha! ha! Enjoy your weekend!

I like your pondering posts. They're a nice break from the busy, busy, busy over here.

October is a most glorious month. May and October are my favorites. We foraged for bittersweet today and bought apples and wool roving. Nice! Have a lovely weekend!

I love this particular Longfellow poem, it is one of my favorites. I have toured the Longfellow Home at Christmas time, it always amazes me that I can stand where the poet once stood and view the desk where Longfellow once wrote. There is a lovely bronze statue of Mr. Longfellow in Portland, nearing Christmas the city places a red bow on a book he is holding. Tis simple however, it makes a dramatic statement.

Kim, I like how you describe your leisure time outside. You are so poetic.

I think that I love every seasons but there are some elements in every seasons that I'm not as happy with but we have to take the good with the bad. Every morning as I make my way to the barn, I walk on a beautiful carpet of red, orange, yellow and brown leaves and I have to smile as I listen to the shuffle of the leaves under my feet. I'm reminded that the cold winter is just beyond my sight but is on her way. I see the pages of the calendar turning so much faster as I grow older. I would just like to hold that perfect day a while longer. Perfect weather seems to be so elusive. But then there's the magic of that first fallen snow. Hugs. JB

Your wild colorful sunflower caught my eye. Very nice. Oh the season of fall. Lovely.

Not so sure what part of California you live in?
I live in Northern California 50 miles north of San Francisco in Sonoma. We get a lot of fall colors here, but not until early November or so. Vineyards galore.

Hi Kim, I just came from Sue's where she mentioned you and can't believe I haven't seen you before. I am a native Ca. girl(northern Ca)but we moved to Colorado four years ago. I'm a nana to 9 and we homeschooled our two girls and they now homeschool theirs. I'm thinking you must live in so.Ca. because you mentioned not getting the colors and up near S.F. we got colors a lot-in fact we miss them here. I'm also a quilter. I'm going to follow you because I think you've got a wonderful blog.
Hugs, Noreen
