Monday Musings

This morning my husband and I went shopping.
One of our smoke alarms started chirping and
we try and change batteries when the time changes.
Our kids live in the upstairs part of the house. There
is 3 bedrooms and a bathroom and a loft.

When he got the ladder upstairs much to our dismay,
only one smoke alarm was in working order. At some time
who knows when they must have chirped and not a one was
to be found, just wires hanging from the ceiling. The ceilings
are ten feet so I hadn't noticed that they were all missing. We
can only surmise that they ended up in the trash can.

So we went shopping for new smoke alarms. While we
were at Wal Mart and we were walking around, I sort of
inched the basket over to the magazine rack. I realized,
I have a addiction to Christmas Magazines. If it has something
to do with ornaments, Christmas trees or food, I want it.
My husband is with me so I just look and though he never says
anything, well not much, when we go to the grocery store, he
does notice that the basket always goes down that aisle.

Gooseberry Patch has it's new Christmas magazine/book out.
Lovely recipes and great things to make. The other two are
from my next favorites Create and Decorate. I feel almost like
if I even made a fraction of the stuff I see in these magazines
there would be no place to walk or sit.

I did make myself stay away from Country Living today. I am
starting to have these little twitches to start hanging out at my favorite
antique stores. There is this one and maybe this year I will remember to
take my camera, but they have old Nativity's made from all over the world.
I would love one but they are so expensive, so I just stand and look at them
and the workmanship will take your breath away.

I refuse to decorate until the day after Thanksgiving because I like my focus
to all be on being Thankful.

I hope you have a lovely Monday.

Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, for His wonderful works to the children of men!

I'm with you about not decorating until after Thanksgiving. I am also addicted to magazines. My employer gives me country Living when she's done with them and a few cooking magazines. She doesn't cook, she just likes to look at the food. I try to encourage her to pick out things she'd like to try, but she's not interested. I used to get a lot of craft magazines at the store, but I hardly ever make the things. I always tell myself I will, but I don't. Reading blogs has kind of replaced magazines a bit, but curling up on the couch with an afghan just doesn't cut it with a computer. Books and magazines are definitely better.
Have a good week, my friend

Hi Kim, I hope your day has been wonderful!

The beeping of fire detector's are ear piercing, so their never something we can put on the to-do list. I think christmas magazine addiction is Incurable, at least for myself anyway :o)

I won't likely be able to do any Christmas decoration this year, because I have a puppy (have you seen the movie Marley & Me? :o)

I will have to buy christmas magazines for decoration this year :o)

I enjoyed your post,
God bless you, - Michele Katherine

You just made a fantastic case for the "check your smoke alarms at least twice a year - when the time changes". Yikes! Glad you discovered it and have bought new ones to guard your upstairs-living kids!

Happy Monday to you!

Good Morning Kim,
I too enjoy all of the Christmas magazines, and found the Gooseberry last week and wanted to buy it, but relented. My dh always knows where to find me in Wal Mart, yep, the magazine section.

Thanks for the reminder to check our alarms. Have you ever had one to go off during the night? The first time that happened to us, we went in a total panic. lol.

Yes I am guilty.I have my hand raised, I am one of the few who start their Christmas decorating early, i mingle it with my Thanksgiving. You know... it's my mothers fault, as she puts hers up early too. lol
Enjoy your day!!!
Much love,
Sue

Hi Kim,
Good morning! Thanks for the reminder to change all the batteries in our smoke alarms.

Can't wait to see what Christmas crafts you make this year. Have a great day :-)

Oh so with you on the Christmas magazines...I saved some and just go back and pull out the old ones because I still enjoy them and the recipes.
Laughing at the smoke alarm...we just pulled one down off the ceiling on Saturday and I need to go get new batteries.
I love November for Thanksgiving and don't change decorations until the after Thanksgiving.
Looking forward to what you make or do this year...how fun!

Hey, I was thinking the other day I need to go antiquing for some decorations I have ideas for... So, you know, I'll help you give in to that desire if you want. ;)

And I'm pretty sure that I heard a story from E that she tore down the detector in her room one night when it was keeping her awake.

Kim, THANKS for reminding me to get my smoke detector checked. The last time it beeped I change the battery with a new one but it kept beeping that ear pricing sound and it was in the middle of the night and I unhooked it and totally forgot about it because of my busy morning ritual. What a great idea to check them regularly when the time changes. You are so wise girl...

I too WAS addicted to gardening, cooking, house decorating, Christmas magazines but after calculating the amount of money I was giving away for day dreaming about what was in the magazine, I realized that I had better place to put my money and so I stopped accumulating them.
I wouldn't say that I'm cured but I'm healing.

As we speak, my husband is checking the fire alarm. This is so timely because we use a wood stove to supplement our heat. I was just told "The best thing to do is buy a new smoke alarm". Thanks again Kim. JB

I too LOVE magazines of all types, but ESPECIALLY Christmas ones! I never heard of Gooseberry Patch, but I will look for that! I also don't decorate until the day after Thanksgiving!

Well, if I recall correctly, the last smoke alarm to bite the dust upstairs had an anthill inside of it.

I wish I could go antiquing and see these old, old nativity sets. I'd be happy with just some durable plastic ones, though, because it's a great way to explain Christmas to little kids. Remember how Baby Jesus was our favorite? :-)

your leaf photos are so lovely! such a treat to see.

i save Christmas magazines from year to year and
use them to decorate around the house. it's
amazing how much beauty they add all by them-
selves.

since, i don't celebrate halloween and really begin
thanksgiving in september, i don't feel too badly
about playing Christmas music in november. :)

have a blessed day, sweet friend.

love,
lea

Hey Kim~I hear you it's so hard to stay away from the Mg's.I know I am addicted too. I get so excited for Christmas and along the way get so very lost.I always try to make one handmade gift for my girls every year and do one large craft with them.

I am loving that cream/white knitted Stocking Sweet! I am going to have to see if my Mother can make those for me.

We also need to check our Fire Alarms. We just stayed in a beach rental house with not one fire alarm.I freaked and ran to the store to pick some up and charged the rental company for the alarms.

~Cheers Kim

Hello
I noticed your name a few times at some of my favorite blog sites so I decided to pop by for a visit and I am so glad I did. Another kindred spirit I am thinking. I too love the Christmas magazines, haha, seems like there are a few of us. I do refrain from decorating for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving for the same reason you do, but I am mentally planning it out as I am in a new house this year. Soo fun. So glad I stopped by, I'll be back for sure. Blessings to you, Debbie

Call me crazy but I have kept all my issues of Country Home and Country Living Magazines since the early eighties. I keep them sorted by holidays and look through them each and every season. I am trying my hardest not to be sucked in by the Christmas mania.I'm still packing up my Halloween decorations! I am very thankful to God for each and everything I have been given in my life.
