Speaking of Books

I can never figure out how it is I have a blog about gardening
when for most of my life, my love has been books.
I know about books, I know very little about gardening.
Yet, I don't write about them very much. When it comes
to books, it is my vice. I love books, and I am drawn to them
and now, because I feel like such a hoarder, I try and stay away
from them, and only borrow them from the library.

I thought today I would share what I am currently reading.
1. The Bible, I am reading Proverbs, Psalms, Mark and
this week Ephesians.
2. Lies Woman believe by Nancy Leigh De Moss

I haven't read it in a long time, but I was going through
the books in my shed and I came across it and I thought,
I think I need to read this again and just check to see if
I am falling for any lies. I will let you know, I think I have
let some stuff creep in like worry and anxiety and stuff like
that I am praying that God will show me where I need to be
corrected.
3.

I am reading this too and praying my way through it
for all mothers. It is a sweet book with lovely pictures.

4.

I got these at the library and I love them, because I read
mysteries but they have to be Cozy Mysteries. No sex,
no graphic murder, and as my husband says, " She reads books
that no one does anything but goes around and talks to everyone."
These all take place around a lady who owns a Stitchery store. I just
love them. They have a pattern in the back of the book.
5.

The last book I am currently reading is this one
Alien Encounters, by Chuck Missler and Mark Eastman.
Don't tell me you have never wondered about Aliens.
My son who is 15 started asking about Aliens and Alien
Abductions and weird stuff like that. My older son
had been reading the Book of Revelation out loud to him and
he started asking questions. I have undertook a study
in this from a Christian point of view. It has been rather
enlightening. As Solomon put it," really there is nothing new
under the sun."
I think my son is learning that it is okay to ask questions, it
is okay to wonder about things like this. There are no wrong questions.
I will do my best to find out the answers.
Not to mention, I admit to being drawn to spooky things. Like
just today I was reading, when Jesus is walking on the water and the disciples
are in the boat and the waves are crashing all around, and they
think it is a ghost. In Mark it doesn't mention Peter getting out of the
boat. Just Jesus walking on the water and going as if to walk on by.
Jesus doesn't say there aren't ghosts. Or yesterday when we are reading
about the demon possessed man, and Jesus asks the demons their name and
they tell him that they are Legion because they are many and they
ask him to not send them away but to let them go into the pigs
and they do then the pigs jump off the cliff.
I mean, okay don't you ever wonder about passages like that.
They are spooky. So I think about them and try to figure out
after the 2000 pigs were dead, were the demons also or
did they go somewhere else.
(Mark chapters 5-6)

So that is what I have been reading. I don't read nearly as much
as I used to, I read once in Stephen King On Writing ( I don't recommend
it by the way, he cusses too much.) But he said, he reads 80 books a year.
That if you want to be a writer you need to read at least that much or more.
I wasn't writing but I wanted to beat his record. So always in the back
of my mind is I have to read more than 80 books a year.

I didn't even cover the books I am doing for school this week, like
The Gold Bug and Other Stories by Edgar Allen Poe
The Mystery of History,
My boys are doing dictation the poem by Edgar Allan Poe,
"Annabel Lee"
Such a great poem, by doing dictation with them, I get them to
memorize great poems. I might tackle
"The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert W. Service.
as the next dictation. The reason
I love books so much is in no other medium are you given
glimpses into the the minds of people who write. That is
why hands down I think the Bible is best, not only is it
a book written outside of time, it was written for us as
manual on life. Not to mention we see into the mind of God.
How wonderful is that.
It just give me chills.
Have a great Wednesday!

Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, for His wonderful works to the children of men!

(Psalm. 107:6)

I love books too, but the last 2 years I haven't really read much. This summer I only finished 1 novel - I used to do that in a weekend. I guess it goes in phases - now I am rug hooking in what used to be my reading time.

I think I've heard about Nancy's book, but I have not read it. I need to read more that's for sure!

I love posts about reading books. I think I inherited my book vice from you, because I'd rather read books and talk about them than do anything else. I can't wait for the kids to get old enough to do all of my favorite read alouds. :-)

Hi Kim,
"Lies Women Believe" looks like a very interesting read. I'm going to go on Half.com and see if I can buy it for a good price. Thanks for the recommendation. Have a great day :-)

kim,

have you ever heard of the 12 step program?
i'm afraid you would have to say, "hi, my name
is kim, and i am a bookaholic!" :)

me, too!!!!! in fact, when the Lord calls me to
fast, i frequently fast all books but the Bible.
now that is a hard fast!

when i am released from this current one, i
am going to run out and get one of your
'talking' mysteries.

this was an EXCELLENT book review. i hope
you do another one soon.

love,
lea

ps. about your resurrected kitty, i have heard
of this more often than one might think.

Hi Kim, I have a large library of books and used to read a lot way back then. I still buy books but never seem to have enough time to read any more. I have given away a lot to make more room as I was running out of shelf space and two of my friends have each given me boxes of books that I enjoy. I enjoy a wide array of books but don't care for science fiction or romance or thrillers. A book has to give me peace, knowledge, contentment and insight and the Bible gives me all those.

I've thought of the same questions. I believe there are spooky things out there...evil is spooky and I like to read up on it too. Thanks for sharing your favorite books at the moment :)

Now that is a variety of reading material. I have an upstairs book for reading in bed and a downstairs book, which I can pick up now and again during the day. I love books, I love the feel of a book in my hand, the smell of a book and there are certain books that feel like old friends and I visit over and over again.I would not be a good candidate for a KINDLE or NOOK, I'm just an old fashioned type of gal.

Hey Kim. I am an avid reader, myself. I know I read at least 80 books a year. I'm with Julie...it's the act of reading that enhances the experience. Somehow, holding the book and turning the pages is part of what I love. No kindle for me. Even audio books do nothing for me.

Ooooh, I LOVE books too! Thanks for the recommendations. I did a Bible study on The Lies Women Believe. Very good.

Thank you for the kind message on my blog concerning my Mom's passing. She is with her Lord and I know so full of joy and wonder, but I sure do miss her...
Thanks again! Love, Joyce
