Earlier this week, I got a package for dying cloth. I have been frustrated because I couldn't get the colors I wanted or the look I wanted so I broke down and bought a book. I am very happy with the product. I found this package on a website called Pioneer Primitives. She had a package that included a dye book, spoons, the five dyes needed and the swatches for the colors you could make out of these five packages of dye.
The book explains how to mix the Cushing dyes and then the right measurements to get each color.
So out of the five dye packages you can get all of these colors. I am so excited and I can't wait to dye some more wool.
I can't wait to see how it turns out. In the book the lady has step by step directions and they are really easy to follow so I think it will be fun and rewarding and I will get the colors I see in my head.
I only got 5 pints of beets out of the little bit I come up. I have had the hardest time with beets. I have soaked the seeds and I thought that would do the trick. So I was reading a blog and a lady was sharing how hard of a time she had with beets and she said they just started them in sets, so I am going to do that next year. I have had such better luck starting things in sets this year and it really has helped with the weed problem. I don't think these will last long, both of my daughters said they were going to take a jar and eat it all by themselves.
Us girls around here love beets. The guys not so much. I think it is we might need iron and beets are very high in iron.
Have a lovely day and I hope a nice weekend. Our humidity is gone this morning so it feels a bit better. We will be over a hundred all weekend and into next week though.
Bye for now,
~Kim~

i ate too many beets as a kid and cannot even think about eating one now.
My kids have gone to midnight showings too. So sad for all the families.
I love pickled beets ice cold from the fridge.
Really shocked and saddened by the shootings in Colorado.
I'll be waiting to see your wool dyeing - it will be so much fun!
Take care,
Christine
I made pickled beets this year for the first time...I want to use them to make red beet eggs. I'm wondering if you have red beet eggs in CA or is that a PA Dutch thing only?
Yay! I'm so glad you got them mixed up. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Yay for beets too! I like them, but I have to be in the mood. I've never had fresh from the garden though, so that might be a different story. Now that swim lessons are over (yay!) I can get back to canning. I have zuccs to process!
Your canned beets look so lovely. Great job.
I didn't know that beets were high in iron. Still don't like them. ;-)
I'm shocked and horrified at the shootings in Colorado. How sad. And it sounds like there's still some danger there ... the gunman's apartment is booby-trapped.
Thank you for your prayers, Kim. The theater where the shooting occurred is not too far from my school. WE haven't heard mention of victims' names. It's so sad.
Good luck with your dyes!
Around here it's the husband who loves beets and all us girls---not so much. I've tried to like them, but I just don't. I'm excited about your dye colors- can't wait to see them! It's so hot and humid around here. I thought something would have to break today and we'd get a storm but it just went all around us. That's the one thing that I don't always love about living so close to the coast-the storms tend to dissipate as they get close to us. Unless they come in from the ocean, which is not often.
A terrible thing about the shooting and my prayers are with the victims and their families.
I love fresh cooked beets and I might be weird but I love them on fresh buttered bread. I still have lots of beet pickles left.
I love the simple dye kit that you got. Dyeing is such a fun thing to do.
Hugs, JB
It's scary to think that we are really not safe anywhere anymore. A theatre? Shocking. Your dye stuff is exciting. Big step up from Kool-aid :)
it's tragic kim, just tragic!!
