Today is the first really hot day we have had this summer. It is so hot my chickens want to stand in the water. You know that saying " Mad as a wet hen." It doesn't apply to today. I have been making puddles in the dust bath holes and they all go stand in them on their little chicken hot feet. They follow me around hoping that somehow I can make it cooler for them. It makes me feel so bad for them.
The sky is this funny color of white. We are under a flash flood watch but I doubt if we see any thing that might look like rain. It will evaporate before it hits the ground. I think I just need to make a freezer full of home made ice cream and have root-beer floats and stay in the pool. I am so spoiled. I have air conditioning.
I am glad it isn't like the 1930s. Can you imagine cooking over a hot stove, in a dress, with not even a cooler? I don't know how they did it. When we moved here, in 1963, the old farmhouse didn't have a cooler or anything just lots of trees. It had a fantastic screened in porch and they would move all of the beds in the house out there. Just for the one summer, I was four then, I thought it was the most magic place to live. I loved going to sleep with my parents so close, the sound of the frogs and the breeze in the trees. It was all farm land then, and there would be the smell of the alfalfa blooming and when they cut it the smell of drying hay. Waking up in the morning, was almost like sleeping outside. I am sure it wasn't as magical to my parents and grandparents, my grandpa would make ice cream in a crank ice cream freezer and he would put watermelon in a tub filled with ice. We would eat watermelon smiles and sit on the porch and spit seeds.
I don't remember it ever being that hot. Not like today. On days like today, it is nice to think about things like that don't you think?
I hope you have a very nice weekend.

Yes, it's fun to think about ice cream! I'm sorry your little hens are so hot. I hope you DO get that rain, Kim!
It's hot here, too. I'm spoiled with AC as well. I'm so crabby when I'm too warm.
what a great transport to a simple country time. at least from a child's point of view. :) i hope you and your chickens can stay cool...
Those are great childhood memories. I don't know how they did all the things in those days. We are all spoiled now.
I hope it cools down for you and your chickens.
Wonderful memories from your childhood. Ice cream suddenly sounds good to me. I remember hand cranked ice cream.
That sounds so fun. I would love to sleep on our outside porch upstairs, but it doesn't have a rail. A 3 story drop if you fell out of bed wouldn't be so fun.
We've talked about sleeping out on our balcony when it's really hot...but the mosquitoes would eat us alive! We are very thankful for the A/C unit we have in our bedroom. If we can get a good night's sleep in comfort, the hot days are that much more bearable.
Oh my we have some similar memories...mine from my grandparents farm and sleeping out on the screen porch, air blowing, (not A/C) sounds of nature...it still is the most calming place to sleep...well I think, because it was as a child.
NO A/C there either and yet I don't remember us complaining...home made ice cream, yes we did that also.
I was just thinking we would do Root Beer floats this weekend so you have convinced me, it was on my to do list with Benjamin.
Sorry for the heat...you know last year was our horrible heat...yea for A/C and no how did they do it?
Those are some great childhood memories! And no, I don't remember it being this hot when I was a kid either. I remember enjoying the sunshine and getting some great exercise to shed the winter weight... now I am stuck in ac most of the summer and too many years of winter weight have stuck! lol! I hope you get some rain soon...
Ugh. It was so terribly disgusting yesterday. It sucked the energy out of me. I hope today is a little better. I'm going to try making soap today! I am so excited. I found pure lye at Floyd's for $4.50/lb and I went to Apple Tree and got essential oils. I am so excited about it I dreamed about it all night long. :D
Such a lovely memory! I could see everything so clearly- and hear the sounds and taste the ice cream and watermelon- it was great! We didn't have AC either but I had a window fan--city girl here- that lulled me to sleep. To this day I have a fan on- though it's mostly for the noise...and the memories. Always so enjoyable visiting you here!
Love this post... and your remembrances!
Well, no need for AC here.... stick your head out the window if you want fresh air, and I can assure you that air is fresh!!
53F today - and that's been our average all summer - cooler than normal, but we've had good dry weather. The UK mainland has had lots and lots of rain, with terrible flooding in England, Wales and Scotland. Very unusual for us to have it dry and them to have such rain!
I love the childhood memories. We are blessed if we can think of our childhoods with 'happy thoughts'. I can, and I'm thankful for that :)
I vote for you to make ice cream and sit by the pool! Hope you did exactly that! ~smile~
The weather has been equally as hard on our chicks too, Kim! We were suppose to get a break the weather man says it is cooler, but due to the rain and the humidity it seems just as hot.
I am usually in by lunch time. ~smile~We went and picked blueberries this morning, and it was so unbelievably hot, but we still had fun!
Enjoy your weekend, and save me some ice cream!
Hugs,
Sue
I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed you sharing your childhood memory! I felt the same when I was growing up and visiting my grandparents home, and what is so amazing is I still get that feeling here on the farm. Sorry for this long comment, I have just got to take the time to email you and get caught up. ~smile~
Hugs,
Sue
things sure were different back in the day!! and we never complained, never, not ever!!
it's just wonderful that you have such beautiful childhood memories!!
Oh Kim, what a lovely cherished memory. It is humid here in Maine and the temperature reached 100 degrees, no relief till Wednesday. No air conditioning nor pool at Dog Trot Farm, this is when I miss my Island life! Your sunflowers are growing wonderfully, I think of you floating in your swimming pool with all your grands, life can't get any better than that! Hugs from steamy Maine, Julie.
Kim
I was raised in MO where it was very hot and humid without any AC. I don't think as a child it bothered me, but as an adult I had times at night that I would go outside and lay in my childrens swimming pool just to coool down.
I hope you get rain soon!
I hope that you get some relief from all that heat. It's hot here too and the cattle comes in the barn when it hot outside. One section of my calf barn is hotter and I notice that the heat affects them too. I make sure they have lots of water.
The old folks sure were tough to work the field and cook on the hot stoves and ovens even on very hot days and the lucky one had summer kitchens.
Take care, hugs.
JB
Those are some sweet memories! But I am with you...I will take the a/c!!
nice post thanks for sharing looking for to visit more...blessings
Love those memories. I think the sun feels ten times hotter than when I was a kid...and I was living in southern CA then! You're making me want a root beer float something awful right now! Hee, hee.
Hugs,
Courtney
