Gardening

This is a picture of last year, see all of the weeds and grass? It was such a mess and such a terrible thing to see every day. I am not going to let it happen this year.

I drew out my garden plan. I was showing my daughter how I wanted it to be yesterday and where I was going to plant this and that, and she remarked, very dryly, " For someone who wasn't going to have a garden this year, this is bigger than you have ever had."
It really never starts out to be big. It just sort of morphs. Here is my rough, and I  mean rough plan.
I have been shopping on seed sites and haunting seed racks every where I go, I am starting to think I have a serious problem. I have bought enough seeds I could easily plant this whole 2 1/2 acres. Here is a picture of my seed box.
That doesn't count the ones that are already growing in pots, or the ones that my husband is picking up today as he had to go pick up some other things at Home Depot.

One of my favorite seed companies is called Renae's Garden Seeds.
I love the way her seed packets look not to mention she sells things I never see anywhere else.
Like these:
They had some colors of sunflowers I have never saw before. I will have to fight the birds I think so I can save these. The finches think I plant these all for them.
I was looking at my gardening books by Sharon Lovejoy. I decided It might be safer this year If I didn't decide to put in some of these but I still am thinking about it.
I would love to put in a Teepee type garden for the kids to go in and have a secret place. We will see though.
We are having a few storms lately and it is easier to go crazy when it isn't so dry and so hot. I will be out in the garden the rest of the day. Life just seems so good when I am in the garden. I finally have volunteer sunflowers coming up, they are about a foot tall, I really did want to fall down on my knees and kiss their little green leaves, I was so happy. I have missed sunflowers so much.

I hope your Saturday is lovely, mine of course will be in my field of dreams doing what I do best...
dreaming.

I love sunflowers...went through a phase where everything in the house was sunflowers....benches, stools, cushions, pots, cans, pictures...everything. Well, perhaps not quite everything...but several things were! I have gotten away from that, but I do still love them. ohmy...the chocolate cherry ones...yummy! You are way too ambitious for me.

Those packets are adorable! They would be really cute as a picture. Ben is talking about starting seeds and planting things this weekend (well, tomorrow I guess since he had to work today). I keep telling him we need to wait, but we're both itching so bad. I have blooms on my cherry tree though! It made me so happy to see them last night.

I can't wait to see this massive garden plan evolve. And the funky new sunflowers ....very cool.

The rain we have had recently has brought about a delay of any ideas for planting. The soil in the garden - largely clay - is too wet for working to plant. My husband is at work with preparations, though, and there are seedlings in the shed just waiting for the right time to be settled into the earth. Enjoy your garden projects!

I was wondering how large your garden is...2 1/2 acres...wow! That's much, much bigger than even any Amish gardens that I've ever seen! You are amazing!
Just saw my first volunteer sunflowers peeping through yesterday. They're about 1" high. :)

I'm up tp my ears in seeds already. In addition to the 5-6 acres for the business, hubby just disced up a huge "kitchen garden" up near the house. I can grow the things the farm can't give us enough of, plus the new and different things the farmer won't grow. Have a sunflower kind of weekend!

Hi Kim! Maybe I should plant sunflowers now! Woo hoo!
I like seeds, too. I bet we could come up with some pretty seed packages and become famous. Just kidding. It is fun to look at the packages, though.
Your garden area looks BIG! You DO live in California though and you can enjoy a nice long growing season.

I am so happy to see you are able to be out and about in your garden, I know you are like me, when we are in our garden we have the most fun, especially when the weather breaks. Today has been rainy and I have been inside, recuperating from painting yesterday. lol I would like to try some purple sunflowers, I am always looking for new kinds of plants.
Well dear friend, as Rebecca Kolls says, "lets get out there and get those hands dirty."
Hugs,
Sue

Your seed box looks much like mine...I always have such big plans in the spring...my garden didn't do too well last year...drought and heat was challenging...hopeful for this year...got all my little seeds started. Looks like you are pretty organized...enjoy

I hope you had a good day in your garden! I spent most of of the day inside cooking....kids from TN are here and we celebrated our daughters bday. It was a lovely day and this morning (Sun) is gorgeous. Temp is perfect, sun shining and birds singing! Enjoying it is a perfect preparation for worship later! Hope your Sunday is glorious, too!

Kim, I am so impressed, that is one massive garden! How I love seeing your beautiful sunflowers, even the little stragglers who pop up on their own. I enjoy Sharon Lovejoy's books too, I just might give the teepee "secret garden" a go. Weather wise we have gone from the high eighties to the forties with rain. No gardening yet for me, have a lovely day, Julie.

Kim, I have been loving your posts. I am not sure that I will be able to have a garden this yr and am so grieved. I love your garden plan. Question, do you space your garden so you can till between rows? If so, how much space? We just got really warm and I'm dying to plant one.

Oh I wish you were close so I could learn from you...mine will be hit and miss, but I am trying. I need to write it out and get it out of my head...oh your seeds look wonderful...thanks for the inspiration.

I did get a blueberry to put in a pot.
