Cold and Perfect Friday

Last night, I had to go outside and it was cold, crisp and clear. I could see so many stars. Only briefly because I turned  tail and ran back in the house. There was a roaring fire and all of the house critters were sleeping as close to the stove as they could get. I can count on one hand the times we have had cold like this. Which means, not very often.

Living in the middle of a oil field like I do, this week, there has been a oil rig at the back of the property pulling sucker rod so the oil well will work better. Every morning long before the sun comes up the lights come on and you can hear men's  voices getting ready to start their day. As I watch, from my perch in the house with my hot coffee in hand, I am so glad I am not them. That poor man who must go up into the crows nest to guide the pipes as they come out of the ground must have the worst job in the world. Being up there with all of the cold and getting all covered in oil and sand.

One of the things I have been very thankful for this week, is my nice chicken house. I am so glad they have a place that is so clean and not as cold as the old coop. I sit out there a few times a day to just watch them be chickens. I noticed the other night when I went out to lock them in and they were all on the roost, how like children they are. As I stood and watched and all of them were trying to find the best spot, one of the hens would look at the one next to her and just peck her in the head for no reason.

It made me remember family vacations. You know how you are driving down the road and kids start to get bored and you hear, " Mom!!! They are breathing on me!!!" " I am not! You are breathing on me!!"  Then as the chickens do comes a giant peck and the fights is on. I thought of that standing there. Having chickens for the eggs is very nice but the entertainment value is priceless.

The weather man keeps saying we will have snow tonight and in the morning. It hasn't snowed in 16 years so I hope this is a year for snow. It is pretty and clear and not a cloud in the sky so we will see if the models are right. It is so frosty though, I can almost pretend it is snow. I have decided that arctic air is wonderful to breathe as it smells so good and clean. After the long hot summer, I think this is bliss.

Have a wonderful Friday, I hope the ice storm isn't as bad as the weather men keep saying. I am watching very nervously our orange and lemon crop. It is just starting to get ripe. We picked some last night and they were okay.

I love Fridays and if it is a snowy, rainy Saturday it will be so nice.

I hope your days are nice too.

Hi Kim,
I so enjoyed your post !
Ah to have a nice new, clean, cozy updated chicken coop must be lovely. That is my wish for the new Spring !
I agree too ,love the eggs, but just having the chickens out and about is a pleasure every day .

Oh I do hope the storm is not as bad as they say for all. I have to say I miss that fighting in the back seat of the car thing:) Take care. B

Haha, I've seen them peck each other on the roost. They must have very hard skulls, as often as they peck each other on the heads.

It's so cold here, too! We have a freeze watch for tonight. They'll be out there with the big fans in the citrus groves. I can't believe we're already a week into December!

I hope that you had warm clothes on to be outside in the cold. You are too funny, high tailing it back to the house to be near the fire. At least you enjoy this type of weather. I can understand, with all the smouldering heat and drought you guys endured this past summer.

I sure hope that you wont loose your citrus fruits. When we have a early frost I get up just before the sun melts the frost and I take the water hose and spray the green vegetables in the garden and it save them from frost bite. The frost comes when the sun comes up.

All our snow is gone and it's mild and raining today. They were announcing freezing rain but we didn't get it so I'm happy. It makes driving hazardous.

I'm glad that your chickens are nice and cosy but chickens have their own ways, don't they. Maybe they pick mites off each others, who knows. lol... Glad they provide entertainment.

Hugs,
JB

Snow, hey? I will gladly send you some of what we get. Right now, there is none, but we are supposed to get some soon. I could live without it. Truly. Chickens...funny creatures. I remember well the bickering in the backseat...of course, I never started any of it. ~grin~ xo

Lucky duck! We're back in the upper 70s. I hate it. It's December for goodness sake. It's taking a lot out of my Christmas spirit. Of course, I don't have to deal with ice and power outages either, so...LOL

Hey, my kids do that too... Just at lunch they were arguing and crying over who swallowed the metal nut a few months ago... *sigh*

I would love snow, but I am getting so nervous about it since I have to be out of the house tomorrow. I guess we'll just see what happens. :)

Sixteen years since you've had snow! I hope you will have at least a dusting this season!

We have had rain much of today, and there is no snow in our forecast until perhaps flurries on Tuesday morning.

Many people across the US are having a difficult time with ice/snow. I send them my best as they cope with this weather!

Did it snow? I hope so! The chickens are funny! I don't think I could handle the hen rivalry, though. I hope your lemons and oranges are okay.

Did it snow?? I hope you got just a little to make you happy and not too cold to damage the fruit trees

That ice - such a pain. Snow, nice - ice, not so much. Sure hope you got some snow - and no ice!

I'm scaring myself...thinking about getting chickens. It's cold and raining here but no sleet, thank God. A good day to stay home, drink something hot and write Sabbath Keeping before a nap.

I guess you didn't get snow? We didn't get much rain, I know that...Just how cold did your thermometer go there? My sister said that with wind machines and irrigating they have saved their citrus so far...
