Wednesday Wonderings

It is already Wednesday and almost August too. It is supposed to be 104 today with some moisture from a hurricane or cyclone in the Pacific. Putting the dishes away at 6:00 A.M. from the dishwasher made me sweat. It will be that way all day. Someone missed the memo that this is dry California.

Writing a blog makes me notice things. The birds are starting to molt. The blue jays look crazy as they have feathers sticking every which way and tail feathers are missing. I wondered the other day, does missing tail feathers make the bird that is flying go different directions like a rudder does a boat? My white Silkies are loosing feathers at a rapid rate. My chicken pen looks like it is filled with snow.

I was watching my new little hens interact with the Silkies and the older hens. I noticed something that made me very sad. My new little hens, just for the fun of it beat up my Silkie hens. Then they laugh like bullies in a school yard. I thought I raised them better than that. I personally think it is the berserk rooster and his hen. I wish I could remember what kind they are because I will never have them again. They are just crazy and I am thinking that when my son takes the rooster to butcher, he might get to take a hen too.

I loved this picture when I took it. The day was cloudy, and the sun came through the clouds as it illuminated the opening out into the garden. I would say what makes me the happiest no matter how I feel at the time, going out through this gate always lifts my spirits. I always feel like I am home. I have often wondered, do you think that in the beginning when the world was perfect, and God made a garden and put Adam in it that is why gardens are so nice? In that perfect world, it doesn't say house. Just wondering.

This morning when we woke up at O Dark Thirty, out in the yard was a skunk. I went and got my camera.

Because I couldn't make myself go out on the pouch and I was hiding behind the door with my arm sticking out to get the picture. I am a coward. Though I did wish I had a rock so I could have chunked him to see what happened. I always like cause and effect experiments. He was really pretty, there also was that little desire to find a baby next year and see if I could tame one.  My SIL told me she just yells at them and stomps her feet and they run away. I wondered what will happen if a skunk is having a bad day?

Well, that is it, all I got today. The heat has started to take its effect. No thoughts seem to be there anymore.
The sun is up now, so the skunks and the foxes have all skedaddled it for home. Time to go water everything and sweat.
Have a delightful Wednesday,
~Kim~

love your morning glories! we've had skunks in the area here, too. the other night, i think the dogs had one cornered up under the deck. the smell was so strong and they were frenzied for hours trying to get under there to him.

Yes it was 75 here this morning st 7 am....going to be a hot one that's for sure...and humid. Just not a good combo is it? Loved the picture of the gate to your garden. Interesting thoughts on gardens and our beginning. Enjoy your day Kim, and try not to sweat too much!

Ugh, yes, I was trying to sit on the porch, and I was just sweating too much. Plus the mosquitoes think I'm free lunch. It's only supposed to be 105, but we have an excessive heat warning, so we'll see how that goes. The monsoons died down and won't pick up until the weekend. I'm cooking in the crock pot.

Haha.. you with your bravery.. getting a picture of the skunk!
I wish I had a picture of you, getting taking that picture***giggle**!!

We walk early mornings in the dark {the only time when it's cool enough...} and I always worry about running into a skunk.
Lucky for us, it hasn't happened.

I love your thoughts on the Garden Of Eden. Yes.. gardens are beautiful and soul filling.

Sorry about the chicken fiasco. What a bummer.
Hope you get it all sorted out, or fried, which ever comes first.
Let that rooster and hen know that their chicken stew days or fried chicken days are upon them, unless they knock off their bullying!!

We had more rain yesterday... yay!!
Hoping to make it 3 days in a row.

Have a great one, stay cool.

K.

Oh yes. I sobbed and sobbed when I read Where the Red Fern Grows. SO SAD.
You're so funny, thinking you'd like a baby skunk. I'll have to tell you the story about my brothers "de-scented" skunk!
I know skunks cause lots of problems at the farm!
Take care today. Try to cool off. It's WAY too hot there!

I have sensed the aroma of skunk more this season than I remember in the past. We are having very cool morning temperatures here, and I am loving it! Sorry it is so hot and humid for you. Those chickens need a lesson in manners, it seems. xo Nellie

I think you made quite an astute observation about gardens. And I quite agree with you! We've been in the 80s for two days now. I am trying not to breathe hard for fear of bringing it to an end. LOL

I can't imagine being in a heat like that but then we have high humidity here so it doesn't take much for me to sweat. What I hate is that the sweat falls in my glasses and then I can't see lol.

Poor little chickens are feeling stressed from all that heat. You need a little sprinkler to cool them off.

My granddaughter is raising some chickens and they have some little roosters that will become delicious at some point.

I can see the skunk in the dark...You might have to get a water gun for that skunk, on second thought maybe you better not... It might enjoy that too much since you have a drought.

Take care, dear friend and don't work too hard in this heat.

Hugs,
JB

We've had a cooler than normal summer here ... not cold but certainly a good 5-10 degrees cooler, with some days where it's even cooler than that! I've discovered that I have a window of temperatures where I'm comfortable ... I can't tolerate the cold, but I don't enjoy the really hot weather (I sweat pretty easily ... just my head ... which means that any attempt to get myself looking nice is all for naught when it's hot - grrrr).

My morning glories are beautiful this year also and I love seeing them in the morning and when they shut again later in the day. I am laughing at stomping at the skunk. One of Benjamin's readings this summer was about a boy befriending a skunk. Your pictures are so refreshing, Nice to stop by...I hope you are doing great!!!
