7th Most Miserable City in the U.S.

This morning, I read that my town ranks 7th as the most miserable city in the U.S. I know it has been hot and all of that stuff, but really? I wondered who they interviewed.

Right up there with the jabs from Hollywood it seems Gallup polls are getting into the action. It makes me laugh. Somebody always knows someone from Bakersfield. I think one of the neatest stories was I have a friend who lives in England. I had mailed her a box for her birthday. She wasn't home when they delivered it so the postman left it with the neighbors next door. She told me later that she went next door and knocked on the door to get her package and the neighbors came to the door all smiling and happy and asked her whom did she know in Bakersfield? She told them and they told her how they had lived here.

It is a giant melting pot filled with lots and lots of people. Bakersfield is now one of the only cities in California that is coming out of the recession not broke. Our Governor, Mr. Jerry Moonbeam Brown if he had his way would wipe us off the map. He hates Bakersfield and makes no bones about it.

One of the things I love about it is when Laura Bush was working to get the Karren People out of Burma because they were being tortured and stuff by the generals in that country. We have a large population of Burmese people who have made this their home.  I had the wonderful joy and privileged of being invited to the New Year Celebration. Me and my family were a few of the white people invited and to be introduced to their food and their culture. Sometimes I think we need a tiny statue of liberty standing at our county line because we have so many people that come here yearning to be free.

So of course, when I read that we are the 7th most miserable I wonder about that. My family came here because of the dust bowl and because of WW ll but it is home and I am thankful this is where I live. Though I might have to move soon for the boys to find wives. My son came home from college to tell me about this girl he met. " He said, " I thought maybe I should come home and ask you her name before I went any further because I was thinking I might be related to her. " I asked what her name was and he told me and I said, " Yep, she is your cousin." So maybe it is time to branch out.

Have a great Thursday,
~Kim~

We've been through Bakersfield MANY times on our way up to SF Bay area. I always thought there were some very pretty farms there. And it aint worse than Needles, that's for sure. ;)

All I know about Bakersfield is that my organic baby carrots comes from there and that you live there with your family. It can't be all that bad. I know it's hot but it's hot in lots of places too.

Someone must have interviewed some depressed people in the wrong lineup, maybe the welfare lineup.

There must be a lot of big families in Bakersfield to be related to so many people. Tuff on the young men to have to look for a bride in other cities.

I hope that your day is going better today.
Hugs,
JB

Where does Fresno rank, 1st? Wonder why central CA towns always get "picked" on? Maybe the people ranking them don't actually visit the cities but rate them from what they see while driving through on Hwy 99.

Haha, watch out for the cousins! But seriously, Bako's a nice little town. I wish we could have stayed there.

What does Jerry Brown hate about Bakersfield? Why does he bother having such a strong opinion? I have had more than one dear friend who lived there and they weren't miserable. One question is, is it the people who live there who are voting or the people looking at statistics and thinking they wouldn't like it? Good for you being contented.

Hello Kim, got a chuckle from the cousin thing........the heat makes everyone miserable I think.....Blessings Francine.

Ha! Our town was listed as the place with the most attractive people. Apparently they've never been to the beach or Walmart. LOL The cousin issue was a riot! Who cares what the 'polls' say. We all probably love where we live or at least love something about it. People just want to stir up trouble wherever and whenever they can.

Oh gosh. I get worried about that too, we have so much family here. I can see how it is miserable... I feel pretty miserable in this heat. Moonbeam... That made me laugh. :)

I'm sure Bakersfield is better just because you are there! We are related to too many people here- just like you.Hope you are doing well. I miss our letters, but I'm working 16 hour days around here.

Too funny about your son and his question, even funnier was the answer! I know Bakersfield is hot, but for pete's sake, so is Texas!!! We will all melt together, friends and cousins alike. :)

So funny about your son....

Oh my - it might be time to branch out. ;-) While I don't live IN St. Louis, I'm in the greater St. Louis area and was dismayed to see it ranked #12. Of course, I'd be quite willing to move ... preferably to the beach, but only if DD and her family moves there, too. ;-)

Dad had many stories to tell of Bakersfield. He loved it there and I often wondered if he were meant to make a life there instead of returning here to family.

Oh the ending just made me giggle..too funny. Well who cares what someone thinks of our city...that might mean they stay away and let us enjoy the riches of it! Enjoy your little corner of the world...I think it is heavenly.

We too have Burmese kids. They are so hardworking and happy to be free. I'm glad you see the positive side of America also. I'm glad that our country is seen as a place of freedom.

I think I would like to visit your fair city...just not in the summer! But it sounds like an interesting place. If Jerry Brown hates it, I would probably LOVE it!! ha! ha!
