Winter

No, I don't have any fall colors yet. I am just dreaming about them today. Just a few observations. The swimming pool is loosing a degree of temperature about every other day. Even though our nights are still warm and the days are hot. The ground is beginning to cool off.
The sun has changed direction that even the morning light has changed from the bright harsh light to one of the mellow quiet light of fall.

The changes are ever so subtle but they are there. My front tree has lost almost all of the leaves now. I noticed that in the mountains around us they have issued a frost warning. So even though I can't feel the fall approaching it is coming. I know that I could take a drive to the mountains and what would greet me would be the sound of the wood peckers putting acorns deep into the bark of the trees. The quiet sound as the acorns rain down to the leaf strewn ground.  Have you ever stood and listened to the acorns fall? The soft pattering as the leaves sigh and crunch.

As I was walking yesterday, I hoped to find one small leaf with red or gold. I see under each tree piles of brown, crunchy leaves that have fallen because of the heat day after day. But no color. I do love that about October, when the trees begin to get dressed up in the reds, the browns, and the orange and yellows.

Dark comes so early now. As I watch the sunset I always feel a catch in my throat, because somehow inside, I remember the days gone by and how fast it changes now from week to week, and soon the light will be gone replaced with the dark that sometimes the lights cannot dispel.

I know that we need the fall as we need the dark nights and the shorter days. I see how hard this summer has been on my trees and my chickens and even me. I love the change in seasons so I will focus the the warm house, the hot chocolate, the pumpkin pie and all of the things that home brings to my mind.

We are having some cooler temperatures here, thankfully. They are really welcome after such above record temperatures we have experienced at times this summer!

I'd much rather hear the soft patter of acorns falling that the ear shattering nooise of crashing tiles coming off the walls but thankfully it is now on to more pleasant work.

Every season has its beauty, but fall is so pretty and crisp! The trees here are also slow to turn and the days are still kind of steamy but I can feel that little nip in the early evenings. And it's definitely getting darker earlier. Our bike rides keep getting bumped up earlier and earier.

Loved your last sentence........how cozy it all sounds!

Have a great upcoming weekend, Kim!

Blessings,
Tammy

I am so ready for fall. My whole being is aching for it. I enjoy the longer nights and the dark coming early. It makes me think of nestling down, with my husband and all my chickies and eating stew and fresh bread and getting apples and cider and all the good stuff. And it means the holidays are coming - I enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas so much now with little ones around me.

I can hardly wait to pull on my boots, grab a sweater and go walking in the woods with the crunch of leaves under my feet. Sigh.....soon

I am getting used to the changes fall brings, cooler weather would be nice but getting dark earlier is a harder adjustment

I'm not quite ready for fall yet. Don't get me wrong. I love fall but I have so many flower beds that needs to be divided and replanted and the weeds taken out. It's back breaking work and I'm a lot slower than I used to be because of my work at the farm. There never seems to be enough time.

I love walking in the colorful leaves too. It would be nice having a gardener to do the work for me. I can only dream.

Hugs. JB

I was thinking about all this the other day too. How awesome it is that God created things just the way He did, you know? The changes that come about with each season. The hot summer sun changes to the brilliant colors and crisp days of Fall to the dark cold of winter and finally then to the warm, sweet days of spring. Each season with it's unique gifts. And then it repeats itself over and over so that we look forward to each one as the last days of the other fade away. I love it....I do hate the shorter days I will admit. But when you add in all the wonderful things about this season, it doesn't seem to matter much huh? Loved this post! Hope you had a good day....

Our mornings have gotten a lot cooler, but our days have been in the eighties. The leaves on the tress are still green. Sunday I will be going to breakfast and then apple picking with my sons girlfriend. I sign fall is coming for sure.

Hi Kim!
I like reading about the sure signs of fall! We've been turning on the attic fan and snuggling under the flannels. The days are still summery, though.

There you go again with your poetic writing! I could 'see' everything you mention and feel it too! Not much here that tells me fall is coming although we have had a bit of temperature reprieve. When the temps get only into the 70s during the day, I'll know fall is here. And I'm having the hardest time being patient. Though I have enjoyed temps only in the 80s. AND we've had some nights when they've been in the 60s and still there when I walk the dogs before the sun comes up! :) Thank you for your lovely visual post. For a few minutes, I saw, felt and smelled fall.
