Berry Vines

When we moved out here one of the things I missed was having our own berry vines. When we had bought our house in town, I tell people I bought it because it had 35 berry vines at the back of the property. Every year I would put gallons of the berries in the freezer and I was able to make jam and cobblers and I guess I just grew accustomed to it. When we moved out here there wasn't a thing except the tree in the front yard. This had been a horse and cattle pasture. So we have spent 10 years getting it the way we like it. I made the mistake of buying Thorn-filled boysenberry bushes one year. It is terrible to pick berries and then have to pull out the thorns before you can wash the berries you just picked.
Yesterday husband and daughter went to gardener heaven here in town called White Forest Nursery. I didn't go because I knew I was feeling pretty crazy already so it was safer my husband and I didn't go together. He came home with 6 Blackberry thorn-less canes and 6 thorn-less Boysenberry canes. I know if I had been there it would have been triple the amount. This was just enough work though.
So he worked the already perfect soil with his tractor and then on Saturday he had got a load of this wonderful mulch he goes to buy for his little trees but it is wonderful in the garden too.
He dumped it in the long trench he made and then we put in the berry canes.
This is my favorite part when everything is all planted and it looks all nice and clean. Notice I didn't show you a picture of the other side of the garden. My other berry vines are filled with weeds. I will get to that this week.
He also bought 3 Rhubarb plants. We planted those but only in a giant pot so I can move it when it gets hot. It gets to hot out in the pasture so I will have to find a place that gets shade part of the day.
He said they had Artichokes. I would love to have some of those too. I love growing Artichokes. Eating them is nice too.
It was a very nice day, we got to be outside in shirtsleeves.
Now off to get stuff done, it is after all Monday.
Have a great week,
~Kim~

You are going to be in heaven when all those berries start coming in.....

We have eight blueberry bushes in the mountains and they are the most delicious berries I have ever eaten...the ones you get in the store are not even close...I love baking and freezing with them but first I have to stand around and eat off the bushes until I am stuffed and then I pick......

We need to come up with some great receipts to share....

Hooray for thornless berry vines! I've missed the gallons of berries, too, even if they are a lot of work out in the heat. When you put that first bite of cobbler in your mouth, it's all worth it.

What a great place to be able to plant! I planted herbs yesterday, and am starting to think about replacing some of my rose bushes.

I would be in Heaven with all that fruit. I love berries. I want to high tunnel berries in a big way for our business and for our family. Every berry producer at the farmers' market sells out EACH WEEK!The difficult part would be having enough to sell after I got near them- well, I said I liked berries:)

Between your vines and our vines, I think might have to have a canning/freezing session this summer just to keep up with it all. I didn't know you got Rhubarb too, that's really good.

I still have enough blackberries in the freezer to make another 8 jars of jam. I have 4 jars left from the December batch I made...gave the others to the kids and parents! I just love picking berries every morning. Mine are wild, though...so I fight the thorns!
Your new berry bed looks so nice.
Hugs,
Courtney

Isn't it wonderful when all your hard work starts to pay off? I planted thornless blackberry bushes and love picking blackberries now.

I knew they would bring you back a treat. We used to have raspberry and blueberry bushes at the cottage. Instead of picking them for preserves, I just used to sit in the middle and eat. :)

I can feel your excitement, because I am the same way! Nothing better than berries and rhubarb. Good luck. You got me all worked up to order some raspberries.

I've been so preoccupied that I missed your post.

I'm feeling a lot of envy right now. You can actually plant berries and rhubarbs and till the soil and ours ground is frozen hard and covered with snow.

You will have lots of berries to make all kind of goodies when they are ripe. JB

I love your berry vines. I planted thornless last year but the drought killed them. How are you going to irrigate them?
