A Chicken Post

This is my Silkie Hen. She is a bantam. I only have one.
When the kids were young we tried over and over to get
Silkie hens but all we ever got were roosters.
Then the year I got chicks I got two silkie hens, a white one
and a gray one. I just loved the gray one best.
But something got into my coop and killed my gray one.
I have tried over and over to get more hens but all I have
had has been more roosters.
Until today.

I am on My Pet Chicken's
mailing list and they had the
availability page up for ordering chicks for 2012 so I took the plunge.
On or about May 7th I will be getting 8 Silkie Bantam Chicks. I ordered
an assortment.

Blue ones like these.

Aren't they pretty? This is the color of the one
I liked so much.

Maybe some black ones.

Maybe a Partridge color.

Maybe one of each, I don't know, but any-day that chicks
are coming is a good day. I won't get mine until May 7th.
Which is good, I wanted it to be a bit warmer because they
have to travel so far across the country to get to me.

I can always buy bigger breeds at the feed store. I might buy
some more Cuckoo Marans this year. I lost 10 hens in 2011.
I can get some more replacement hens. The last time I went
to the feed store, they had silkie chicks but they were all roosters.
This way if I order them I can get hens.

I don't know but knowing that I will be getting chicks in the spring,
just makes it feel like 2012 will be a good year. We also get a new
baby in March so there is so much to look forward too.

Isn't it funny to think I just ordered chicks that aren't even an egg yet?

Have a great weekend,
~Kim~

Nothing says Spring like baby chicks. Those silkies are so cool looking. Like little feathered divas. I hope you give them all glamourous names.

They are such a pretty breed. I have my breeds all picked out if the time ever comes when I have a coop.

Aww those Silken chicks are so fluffy. I wonder if they get hot in California with their fluffy feathers. Too cute. Do they bath in a pool of water to cool off like the wild birds do?

It must be so awful to loose your chickens. I hope that you'll send us some photos when the chicks arrives in May. It's nice to have something to herald the spring with baby chick. take care. Hugs, JB

I love them! SOOOOO cute! I wish you hadn't done this post. Maybe having chickens wouldn't be so bad. They are beauties. I also love your December header photo.

I hope you get all hens! They are cute! I love my Bantam birds, they are very sweet. I have 2 cuckoo maran pullets now, they are somewhat friendly and sweet. But they are huge compared to the bantams! Happy 2012!

Hi Kim, checking in on you today and trying to read up on my dear blog friends. I am glad you are getting silkies-that is awesome news. I love silkies. We lost our 3 white ones this year--I can’t keep white ones, they always die on us and I just don’t know why. I have a beautiful blue one and some frizzles too. Hope you are all doing well!
Hugs from WV, Amy

Are the silkies decent layers? They remind me of Phyllis Diller with that funny "hair do" on top.
