A Nice Morning In April

It looks today to be a beautiful day in April. I had to take the dog out at 3:00 AM and the air smelled so strongly of orange blooms, there was a mockingbird singing his heart off in a tree off in the distance. There was just the sound of the breeze in the new green leaves. It was light enough to see around me. I could hear the pool filter humming quietly. I thought, it is such a beautiful morning, I shouldn't go back to bed. I did though and went fast asleep. Now that I have walked around with my camera, it is still beautiful and I don't have to worry about wildlife.

I was surprised  to see how many buds were on the rose bushes so far. This is my Abraham Lincoln rose. It is one of my favorites.

I had to take this photo from last week's work while everyone was painting on Saturday, I decided I would clean the flowerbeds. I really like how white and pretty the railings look against the green and purple of the irises.

The big tree in front is all leaved out and we spent one Saturday trimming trees and getting everything ready for the wedding.

Everything is coming together very nicely.

My husband took tiny little apples that fell off the crab apple trees and he grew apple trees from them. This year he grafted limbs from the parent tree to the trees from the fruit.
This is what he got.

He has one blooming grafted limb on the green tree.

Here is a better picture of the little graft on the green tree. It just amazes me. He could take different kind of apples and he could graft them to this root stock and he could get all different kinds of fruit from one tree.
I have read about the Johnny Appleseed trees and how good they are and how disease resistant they are and why they are still are excellent tree to graft to if you can find root stock.

It is burning daylight and I have lots of work to do today. It is time to grab my gloves and get to work. Thanks for stopping by today.

The grafting results are pretty amazing. It's wonderful how a tree will accept a limb from another tree and let it grow to be what it was meant to be. Kind of biblical, don't you think.
Have a great weekend and don't work too hard.
Hugs,
JB

I just love the pictures you paint of your home and the grounds. Though I cannot for the life of me understand what y'all (and that includes the mockingbird) were doing up at 3:00 in the morning!

Kim, I have come to the conclusion...if you want projects accomplished ASAP around the house (both inside and out)...host a wedding!!! Beautiful roses, trees and flowers. Is the last flower in your post a columbine? very pretty. Hugs, Julie.

The photos are just lovely. I love reading about his tree grafting. Most of the old trees here have gone off to knots, it would be wonderful to get some of the old varieties going around, such treasures they are. I have no apple trees of any kind, but remember the smells from my youth. I looked at the fruit trees in the local wal-moneymart, but did not buy, no room here really for any, but it's a pleasure just to wander around a garden center in the spring. Have a great weekend!

What a beautiful crimson rose. I can't imagine how fragrant and gorgeous the whole bush will be once they all bloom. I wish I could enjoy our crisp sunny day here in MA. I picked up a flu from school and am still in my pajamas:(

When my sister was visiting, we went to a nursery in St. Louis where they were selling apple trees with 3 other apple trees grafted in, resulting in 1 tree with 4 different kinds of apples. When I saw the grafts, I immediately thought of your husband.
