In The Garden

Happy Monday!! I have been working in the garden for 4 days. I have been trying to get caught up with the weeds. Question: Do you ever get caught up with weeds? I think it is like laundry. It is a illusion. It looks nice though.

I took a picture from a different angle than I normally do. This empty bed is now filled with pumpkin seeds.
I planted so many yesterday. Around here, people plant pumpkins on the 4th of July. I tried that one year, and the bugs got the plants and I had a horrible crop so I try to plant now the first week in June.
The apricots are getting ripe. I forget this tree because it is in the back. I decided this year I am not going to forget them.
I do have to tell you a story on myself. During the spring, I kept taking pictures of the cherry trees I have planted near my chicken coops. This year they have been covered in cherries. I have just been picking them and feeding them to the chickens. The reason being is these are ornamental cherry trees. I couldn't understand why this year they had these huge, beautiful cherries. I kept thinking what a shame too.
Did I taste them? I did once and they were yucky. I thought it was weird that this year the chickens like them.

My daughter came over this weekend with her kids and we were out in back and as we walked under the cherry tree she picked one and ate it. She said, " Mom, these are good cherries." They are a bit sour but that is what you cook with anyway. So I ate one that wasn't sour and then she wanted a bucket to take home to make a cherry pie.
I have two of these trees loaded with cherries. When we planted them, I just didn't pay much attention. This place was like the Sahara Desert out here and we were just planting for shade. So it was a very nice surprise to find out that you can cook with them. I still wonder though, when I was picking my name for my blog, why it was I picked " Farm Girl." Because I really am not one but in the process of being one. :)

As a friend of mine asked me when she met me, what was I good at? I had to tell her truthfully I was pretty good with a hula-hoe. I still really enjoy chopping weeds. Just not in my flowerbeds.

All of my tomatoes plants have lots and lots of tomatoes. I can't wait until they are ripe. When we were planting tomatoes, I didn't have any cherry tomatoes this year. My husband had to go run a errand so I asked him if he would stop by the garden store and pick up a cherry tomato plant for my grand daughter. When she comes over to my house, she always wants a little container filled with " Po-matoes" I keep checking the progress on the cherry po-matoe plant and it is covered in them. I can't wait to take her out there and let her eat them straight off the plant. ( As I laugh to myself, evilly.) She is the only one in my family who will eat them raw.

We finally have some ripe berries. I ate these though, after the picture was taken. I need to pick some for a cobbler. I am craving a berry cobbler.

I have spent lots and lots of time in the garden. I will take some better pictures of it in the morning. The sun had changed and I lost the light this morning.
I hope your Monday is off to a good start. I weeded the garden, now it is time to mop my floors. Mondays are busy days.

Thanks for stopping by,
~Kim~

you always make me laugh w/ your hula hoe. you are good at SO many things, kim! and what time should i bring the vanilla ice cream for the cobbler? :)

I'm gonna ask a "dumb question"...what is a hula hoe?! :) Maybe if I had one, my garden would look weed-free, like yours! The pig weed is taking over, and it's too wet to rototill after 2 1/2" of rain this weekend. I'm afraid the weeds are going to win, and it's only the beginning of June!

You crack me up. Of all your many talents, why would you pick the hula hoe? Lol I always envy your fruit trees. We used to have raspberry bushes at the cottage but one year someone mowed them down :( It was an accident but still..... I always think how cool it would be to go pick your very own lemons and make lemonade. I don't even really love lemonade but it just sounds like a great thing to do. (I know, silly me)

No, there is never an end to the weeds.

I had a whole new perspective on the following scripture once I became a gardener.

And to the man he said,

“Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree
whose fruit I commanded you not to eat,
the ground is cursed because of you.
All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.
18 It will grow thorns and thistles for you,
though you will eat of its grains.
19 By the sweat of your brow
will you have food to eat
until you return to the ground
from which you were made.
For you were made from dust,
and to dust you will return.”

Gosh, I can't believe your tomatoes are so big! Mine plants are just getting flowers. Although, I didn't start seedlings we just planted in the dirt this year.

What time on Wednesday? And do you want me to bring my wheel?

DoodleBug does the same thing with our cherry tomatoes- she always has. She used to eat regular tomatoes like an apple! Cherry toms are my favorites. And cherries! LOVE them! A pie sounds just right! Will you be able to use them for some jam? If it's not raining tomorrow, I'm going to take pix of my garden!

I didn't even know you had tomato plants out there! Just goes to show how huge your garden is. I can't wait to get more cherries. We ate up that cobbler and it was all kinds of delish.

Your garden is growing well to have big tomatoes like that and the foliage looks so heathy. All those fruit trees are making me envious.

Not really though because you work so hard at chopping weeds and planting that you really deserve a nice garden and all those juicy tree ripened fruits.

Thanks for sharing your day with us. Hugs. JB

I have a similar cherry story. Many, many years ago we had a house with a cherry tree. I thought they were sweet cherries, which I don't like, so we let the birds eat the cherries. One year someone said that they were pie cherries ... and I LOVE cherry pie! So we picked cherries, pitted cherries, and froze up a whole bunch of cherry pies. The next year we sold the house. If only we'd known all those years!

You have amazing gardening stamina, Kim! I find that I am not a "clean picker" of weeds. Bill comes out and checks on me and says, "What about that one? Isn't that a thistle?" Hmmmm.

I don't think weeding is ever done, even in my small yard!
Home grown tomatoes. Tomatoes that actually have flavor. Yum! And berry cobbler. Can I stop by?
Pug hugs :)
