Chats on The Farmhouse Porch

My daughter was asking me why I am so tired all of a sudden. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me too. Then I thought it all started with the episode of the skunk visits. Last night was a very close call. Every night when Sasha wants to go outside, I get up grab a flashlight and go out the door and shine it all around the yard. If no eyes are looking back I go get the dog. Last night, I was shining the flash light around the yard and I didn't see anything, but I still had that feeling I was being watched. I walked down to the end of my porch and shined the flashlight down the fence line and then something moved and I shined the light in my flowerbed and there not a foot away from me watching me being really still was the skunk. I turned and ran in the house. So the reason I am so tired right now, is I keep having these adrenaline rushes at two in the morning and I don't go back to sleep. I ended up taking Sasha to the front yard praying there wasn't two skunks.
A little later it must have got in a fight in my side yard as the house was filled with scent. I could hear the sound of windows being slammed upstairs. My early morning adventures have to stop. I am not a violent person but I am having thoughts of guns and traps and things like that.

Okay I think it is safe now to come out on the porch with me. No skunks are around.

Questions

1.    What are you doing for Memorial Weekend?
I imagine working, in the garden and working around the house. It will be a four day weekend and it promises to be cool so we will try to get as much work done as we can before the heat sets in and then we can't work.

2.    What's the last old movie you saw?
A Shadow of a Doubt. It is a Alfred Hitchcock movie, with Joseph Cotton. I was on a Joseph Cotton kick.

 3.   What color are the walls in your living room.
The whole inside of my house is painted a color called Sunshine White. The wood work is white. I still love the color and I have never got tired of it, every time I think about painting I always come back to this color.

4.    What's your favorite food to cook on the grill?
Just about anything on the grill. I love cooking outside. The kids keep asking for pizza so I need to try that soon.

5.    What's your favorite animal?
I love all animals even skunks if they would stay out of my yard. When I was young my Mom had a pet skunk, it was a great pet. My vet told me he would descent them if I brought them in, which just ain't gonna happen. I have always been pretty crazy about animals.

Thanks to Patrice for some nice question. I guess this time of year is just a busy time. I hope everyone has a nice week and thank you for stopping by and visiting.

Hobo Skunk, eh? ;) It's a four day weekend for us too! Yay!

We have had a few skunks around here too. Elvis runs when he sees one now, haha. Really don't want a repeat of that. Sunshine white? I am imagining a creamy, yellowish white? Sounds good...ENJOY your 4 days!

Bless your heart girl, we battled those stinkin' critters for most the summer several years ago.

It did make for some great blogfodder but the suckers had dug under the foundation and set up housekeepin' under the house.

I did take desperate measures. I made mouse poisin peanut butter balls, thrived on 'em I tell ya. Put mothball under the house (I was told that would evacuate 'em) The seemed to love the smell and invited friends over. Me??? Stunk up the house for years!

Hubs tried to shoot 'em but I have a forrest of flowers 'round here and they'd get away. We finally ended up trappin' 'em and well...let's just say there not gonna bother anyone again! Heeeehehehe!

God bless ya and have an awesome day sweetie!!!

Hi there, I can well imagine the fear of seeing the skunk up close and personal. I thought ants on my puppies face was bad, but yours takes the cake today. At least you didn't get sprayed. I would not be happy with skunks in my yard.
Thanks for sharing.
Hugs, Noreen

I hate those 2:00 am adrenalin rushes. It's nearly impossible to get back to sleep afterwards. I'm going to head over and pick up the questions for the chat in a bit!

i think a trap will be needed - as long as you have an open pick-up bed to transport the varmint...

Ohhh that is exhausting for you!
Hope you have a lovely relaxing Memorial weekend!

Sorry about you nocturnal encounters with the a resident skunk. I wonder how you could get rid of it somehow. Do you have pest control around your area? They could catch it and dispose of it in another unpopulated area. It might have a nest of babies around your house.
Obviously something is attracting it to that area

Hope that you get the situation remedied soon. You need your sleep.

Hugs, JB

A skunk is something I don't want to come in contact with. I hope tonight is peaceful for you.

Have a fun holiday weekend.

You are much more patient than I! I would have already taken that skunk OUT...or gotten my Hubby or son to do it. :-)

Darn smelly skunks. Just what you need at two in the morning. I have been afraid of coyotes. I saw two last week near my neighborhood. Bella is over sixty pounds, but the coyotes are very wily and lure the dog away so the pack can attack.

the skunks are all a part of a farm, so for me... I feel right at home with the fact that they visit YOU! :)

Your blog is such fun, Kim.

Kim, I just love the fact that even though you are tormented by skunks, you still like them :)

Not sure I could still have nice feelings towards a skunk, maybe you will be lucky and he will move on soon so you can get some sleep.

Poor you...I think I would make my pooch hold it till morning..(just kidding)...I do hope they move on soon. Like the new look too.

And here I've been all grouchy about the baby teething and being up every two hours. At least she doesn't spray scent and carry rabies!

I can't imagine being up looking for skunks in the middle of the night! Hopefully you will have a chance to catch up on some rest soon!

My mom had a pet skunk before I was born. Someone stole it from it's house in the backyard. I hope you can get a lot accomplished in the garden while it is still cool. Sorry if my last email sounded like I was rattling on... I think I was. :)

Just reading about your adventures with that skunk wear me out! ;-)

I'm glad you're going to have a cooler weekend ... we're going to have temperatures in the upper 90's!! I think this weekend will be a good time to stay inside and sew!

yikes kim, the nasty skunks just won't give you a break!! no pets here, but they constantly spray the house. it stinks, even if you close the windows.

this is the time of year i want to open the windows and let the fresh air in, except our air isn't fresh!!!

we trapped 2, then let them go elsewhere. you need a tarp if you are going to do that and like tex said an open pick up truck!!

I suppose I should stop complaining about my a.m. moments letting the dog out. At least I don't have to worry about other varmints!

You are one brave woman!! We use to have raccoons on our back porch at 3 am each morning...which is when our little one would come down the stairs to get in bed with us, and he would wake me up to come see them. LOL a little different than watching for skunks!

Enjoy your weekend...get some rest! I love grilling everything also.

Oh my gosh, skunks scare the heck out of me.

HavaHeart Trap but then you run the risk of being sprayed. Or, could you call animal control and they could catch it for you? Around here, they'd laugh me off the farm but I'd still call -smile-. I hate those 3 a.m. rushes...just wreck the rest of the night's sleep!
