A Childlike Christmas

My friend Pom Pom over at Pom Pom's Ponderings,
is doing a short little feature through Christmas called
a Childlike Christmas. I thought it might be nice to join in
so if you get a chance go over and visit her today.

I thought I would share about my Nativity Set. When I got married
my lovely SIL bought a Mary, Joesph and Baby Jesus. I was thrilled.
It was also plastic. I wanted when I had kids to be able to let them
play with it without fear of it breaking.

As each of the children came along I would let them hold the pieces
and I would tell them the story. I would read it from the Bible to them.
Since I am a tactile learner, I have always thought it is easier to teach,
if my kids can hold it, and touch what ever I am teaching them.

Through the years I kept collecting pieces. I have so many now.
I am sorry about this picture, I didn't notice it until too late
but Jesus isn't in the manger. There is a donkey. I mean no disrespect
He is around there somewhere, but my kids now hide him and I have to look
among all of the other pieces until I find him. They never say
anything, but all Christmas this goes on, hiding the baby until
Christmas then he gets to stay in the manger.

These are some of my favorite pieces. The horse and the elephant
and the 3 wise men on the camels. My husband used to
have to work in Michigan a lot so one year we went with him.
We stayed a extra week and rented a car and went all over
that lovely state. We went to a place that had a Christmas store
and they had the 3 wise men. I have never seen them ever again.
I am so glad I bought them when I did.

I apologize for the pictures. It is so dark. The sun has
left for awhile and it doesn't get light all day. It is like
living in a cave right now. We are supposed to have a storm
that is one of those once in a decade deals tomorrow and it is
supposed to blow away the fog.

I hope you get a chance to stop by and visit with Pom Pom and
all of her nice friends.

I hope you are having a nice week. I am still sick so the brain
is still in a deep freeze.

Those carved figures are awesome and it's always good to come back to the real meaning of Christmas!

I love your tradition and way of teaching your children with the Nativity. It's hard to believe those are made of plastic, they are so beautiful! Thank you for sharing this, Kim.

These are so pretty, FG. ;)
I'm glad you liked the burlap wreath. I'll post a tutorial soon. I seem to be going for a lot of burlap lately. Guess it's so simple.

I hope you get well soon. My bug has been very stubborn too. Our daughter fought it for a month but hers was bronchitis. I'm not coughing anymore but my throat was in pain for days, without a fever. My son too. He's a paramedic and mentioned tonsilitis. I hate going to the doctor. I put myself through so much to never get a diagnosis, all they give me typically is meds. Seems the only place you get a doctor to diagnose is in the ER, sadly. But, all my natural remedies are kicking in now. They just take more time. If you feel you need to go in, don't hesitate because sometimes it requires antibiotics.
Anywho, feel better.

I know what you mean, Kim! My brain definitely has a cold! I want to take a nap right now!
I love your nativity set. It's so lovely, important, and MEANINGFUL! I have a tiny one that I put someplace and now I can't find it. Still hunting.
I love this post! It's perfect!

Wonderful! I have a nativity set similar to yours and the pieces are hard to find now. Letting children handle the pieces and tell the story and act it out is the best thing ever.

I have never thought about adding to my nativity set. What a great idea! I think I will give the kids a piece for Christmas. I love the visual of you and all of your little babies around the nativity scene.

The nativity is lovely. I personally don't put the Wise Men out but nothing says "Christmas" like a nativity scene to me. Hope you feel better.

Love your set...love how you use it to tell the story and that the kids can play with it. I was wondering how you were feeling. Blessings and healing in Jesus name

I put out your trees this morning...they are right beside my snowmen, near my kitchen sink, for me to be reminded each day of what a precious person you are.

Hi Kim, Loved seeing your Nativity scene-so precious. I've had mine for 30+ yrs and love it-it is pretty simple but I still cherish it.
I will go visit your friend also. Have a wonderful afternoon.

Thank you for sharing your nativity set with us. I love little family traditions like hiding the infant figure until Christmas, how lovely of your family to do that.
Hope you feel better soon.

The kids must remember fondly your Nativity set. I have a smaller version.

I think my last day of school is the 23rd.

Hello, popping in from Pom Pom's festive slot- have a mince pie! I love your figures! When my older sun was born I went straight out and bought the sturdiest, most child-friendly Nativity figures I could find! But they also love the santons we've been collecting on trips to France. I always had them arranged on either side of the creche, facing out, to be seen by their audience, but now the suns turn them around, with their backs to the world, so that they are facing Jesus. Much better! And only last year did I realise the crib should be empty until Christnas Day. A fine idea too!

I'm so sorry to hear you're not well. I've been so caught up in sewing I haven't been very attentive to reading my favorite blogs.
Your nativity set is beautiful. I'm afraid one of my wise men lost his back half, but I still use the set, as it is special to me.
I hope you get to feeling better!

I love your beautiful nativity. It looks like a classic.

I put out my nativity set every year. It's porcelain so the kids are not allowed to handle the pieces. My daughter bought it for me as a gift one Christmas. I cherish it.

I still have several nativity sets in ceramic bisque that needs painting but spare time is rare these days. I have too many projects to finish yet. JB
