Thoughts on Motherhood

Mother's Day is around the corner. I always thought
you needed to feel like a mother for this holiday to "work."
I saw a sign once that said, " Who are all of these children,
and why are they calling me Mother."(I wanted one but my husband didn't like it.)
I was sitting on the front porch when I was in labor one
time and there was 3 kids asleep in the house and yet I kept
wondering how they got there.

Being a mother was never never in the list of things I wanted to
be. I wanted to be a vet, or a nurse. I wanted to be a special education
teacher and then I wanted to just be rich and make lots of money and
be famous all of that. I wanted to ride horses and train them and
have a famous stable. Then I wanted to be a cattle rancher.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, I thought it was going to be
like how I loved my cat. I loved my cat a lot. I told my Mom, "that I was
going to put the kid in daycare and I was going back to work. I wasn't going
to be like those dumb women that lost their brains when they had a kid."

My Mom said, " since you feel this way, why don't you just give the baby to me?"
I said, " sure no problem." There was a tiny tug at my heart as I said that though.

When I had her, and the doctor said, " It's a girl." I thought
I would die because I thought I knew what love was, but until that moment, I never knew.
My knees would go weak, with my love for my children, I never knew that I would
care about their lives more than my own. I never knew that I would gladly give my life
to protect them.
When my Mom came in the first thing she said was, " You gave her to me she is mine, when
can I take her home?" I clutched her to my chest and said, " she is mine I worked too hard
for her."
But when my Dad came in, I cried and cried and said, " I was so sorry I broke your heart."
I never knew how much you loved me."

One time when I was pregnant with my sixth child, a person said, " Will you love this baby as much as the others?
" Isn't it hard to love more than a couple of kids?" I explained that
your heart grows bigger and bigger and love knows no bounds nor is it limited by number.

Now as a grandmother, I am so thankful for my girls. My girls are the best mothers.
They work so hard every day at the jobs they have been given.
They do a much better job than I ever did.
They have lovely children and I am so proud of them and really, I enjoy every
day watching them mother the gifts they have been given.
So from me to my lovely, girls,
Happy Mother's Day.

Now my sign will say, " Who are all of these kids and why are they
calling me gama."

Have a lovely day Mother's Day.

Kim, I know you are an amazing mother as you have raised such talented children. One can not really express the love that is instantly felt upon having a child, until it happen to you. My heart just overflowed with love the minute I saw them and the love for my second child was just as intense. No matter how old my boys become they are still my babies. Happy Mother's Day to you, sending blessings from maine, Julie

First I have to laugh...I have that saying on a cross stitch with six kids hanging off of her and I plan to get it done one day...because there are times I wonder how I got six kids...all a total joy, but I am still amazed.

Enjoy the rewards of your parenting as you see your children parent...I have heard that is when you know you were a good parent.

Have a wonderful Mother's Day, enjoy all those grands and give yourself a big hug!!

LOL! I think I've seen that sign and I loved it too. Thought it was hilarious. Also, even more hilarious... That you thought you would love the baby like you loved your cat. Yeah, it's a little more than that. ;)

Happy Mother's day to you too! I'm so glad I got you as my second mommy. :D

How beautiful Kim! Isn't it amazing the heart of a parent for their children? God knew all along, and set the example for all of us.

And yes, watching my own parent THEIR children is the biggest joy of all. (That and being a 'mimi' to all of them)

Happy Mother's Day to a precious mom!

I too have chuckled at the bumper sticker that says "Who are these children and why are they calling me mom?"

Oh Kim, what a lovely post today. Yes I agree with you that loves changes everything. It changes what you think and what you do. It does put perspective on what is important.

I had to laugh at the spot where your mother said "You gave her to me, she is mine" You know what came to mine is the story of Rumpelstilskin, and the princess who had to spin straw into gold. lol.

Happy Mother's Day to you too. Julia

Dear Kim, what a beautiful Mother's Day post, You have covered every emotion so well. While getting to know you, I have seen this love not only for your children but your beautiful grandchildren as well come forth in your writings. I have been so blessed each time I visit you.

As you probably know by now, I have been absent from blogging, but just couldn't let this day go by without coming by and wishing a most blessed and happy Mother's Day, and to let you know what a treasure you are to me, and how often I think of you.
Hugs,
Sue

Great post! I totally understand the sign you wanted and I think your hubby would have understood if he had ever given birth himself. It's a mom thing and when you have multiple kids, it can be a bit overwhelming some days. There used to be a photo used in an ad that had a polar bear with baby polar bears crawling all over her. I used to tell my hubby that I felt like that.

Motherhood is awesome. I never realized how much so until I had the girls.

Have a blessed and happy Mother's Day.
