Friday Catch Up

Today I finally got my Primitive Quilts and Projects magazine.
I thought it was beautiful and I enjoyed looking at every picture
and I thought it is one of the most beautiful magazines I have
ever held in my hands. The people that they have that have projects
in here are some of my favorites. My husband picked it up and thumbed thorough it and he
was equally impressed.

I have these trumpet vines growing on my white fence.
They have never really done very well but this year they
are just spectacular. We have had a couple of warm days
so moths are hatching every where.
I really don't like it when moths fly at my head so I felt funny
trying to take pictures dodging moths.

I went out on the porch the other morning and underneath
where the porch light was was this giant tomato moth.
You know on your tomatoes when you have those horn worm
looking things that eat all of the green leaves, well this is what they
turn into. One year we caught a bunch and put them in a fish tank
and put lots of tomato limbs and dirt in the bottom the tomato worm
ate the leaves and then started going around and around the dirt
in the tank and pretty soon it buried itself in the dirt and made a pupae
case. It is a brown cocoon with a small brown thing that goes on the top
and that is for the tongue. I have stood and looked at them and I finally
figured it out. A tomato horn worm doesn't have a long tongue but
when it comes out like a moth I guess it has to have a place for its
tongue to develop. Have you ever caught a butterfly and pulled it tongue
out very gently? It is real long.
I know they are considered a pest but the moth is a very good pollinator.
With bees dying off so bad we need to start looking into developing the wild
bees and moths. Orchard bees are very good workers as well as Bumble bees.

I was also walking around my yard and I thought this looked pretty. This is the side
of my house where my office is and where I have what is called the quiet porch.
The trees have almost the whole area in shade. The only fly in the ointment is our
old, old Chinese Paradise tree is blooming. I hate to sound crass but the blooms smell
like cat pee. So the whole yard smells like that. It only blooms a short time but I see why
those trees never caught on.

It is such a beautiful tree I will just put up with the blooms
and the smell once a year.
This is my getting caught up on Friday post. There are lots
of linky parties going on Fridays. Lots of nice ladies who have
lovely blogs that have such wonderful things to share.
I have some of them on my side bar.

I hope you have a very nice Friday and I am so glad it is Friday too.

Oh how I'd love to be able to quilt.... it's on my 'to-do' list for when my homeschooling days are over :)

That is a lovely looking moth, but since we began growing veg, butterflies and such things have become public enemy #1 !

Enjoy your Friday. And your weekend! x

I got my magazine last week and forgot to post about it. I like it too but I hope they put more rug hooking projects in the next one.
I love the sound of your quiet porch. Everyone should have a place like that. You are so funny with the cat pee. :)

had to laugh at the 'cat pee' tree. we have an ornamental pear tree here that smells like sewer when it blooms (2 years in a row we almost called the septic service out to look at our system as we thought something was wrong. it was the tree.)

Kim, I had to laugh, no I never pulled a butterfly's tongue out... but I guess you did. You are amazing. Those blossoms are pretty to look... and are there to make you appreciate the fragrances of other beautiful flowers. JB

You are my horticulturist, Kim. I always learn so much from your meanderings about farm things. I think the house looks wonderful, peaceful and cozy and just right!

Moths are so interestingly pretty. Too bad they come from veggie killing bugs. :(

As a hoarder of wool, I fear the moth. But, I do appreciate their beauty. I once happened upon many luna moths at once at a little truck stop in NH. It was so amazing. I also love hatching monarch butterflies.

I thought that when you were talking about the quilt and project magazine you were going to tell us you were making something. No?

I loved getting a glimpse of your lovely home!
