Monday Musings

I was noticing the calendar that Monday is the 22nd of November. It marks
the death of C.S.Lewis. His death was overshadowed
by the death of J.F.K. The whole world watched in
horror at what happened that day in Dallas. Also
on that day was the death of Aldous Huxley, The writer of Brave New World.
His grandfather was once known as Charles Darwin's bulldog.

My husband and I were chatting about it and all that we
remembered was our cartoons were preempted. Then
it seemed like years before my parents watched anything
else but that on T.V. We were living in that very old
farmhouse and I remember sitting in one of the very cold
back bedrooms cutting paper out of magazines. The teacher
told my Mom that I didn't know how to use scissors so I sat
and cut paper and tried to stay on the lines. I must not have
learned much because it is still hard for me to cut a straight line.

C.S. Lewis on the other hand, has been a hero. I have wished
many, many times I could think the way he could think and I
could reason the way he was able to reason.
I think he must have been a very good chess player as he was able
to see the moves so far ahead of time.

I thought I would give you some of his quotes that I just think are
yummy to the brain. All quotes are from C.S. Lewis born Nov. 29, 1898
died Nov. 22, 1963

A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell.

Humans are amphibians - half spirit and half animal. As spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time.

I gave in, and admitted that God was God.

You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream

~ God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world ~

I have read his books and lots of books about C.S. Lewis but I have to say my favorite
book is written by his step-son Douglas Grisham, Jack's Life: The story of C.S. Lewis.
I thought is was excellent and has a very good description of the first World War.
I like books that challenge my intellect and I can say that C.S. Lewis is one
of those writers.
Just one of those interesting tidbits I ran across, did you know that Chuck Colson
has in in his study the last pipe that C.S. Lewis smoked. The C.S. Lewis foundation
gave it to Charles Colson after Mr. Lewis's death.
It was Mere Christianity that brought the Nixon Hatchet man to Christ. I always love
how those things happen.
That is why books are so amazing to me. Especially because one of my favorite books
starts off with " In the Beginning was the Word... Did you ever think how the old Testament
starts off with "In the Beginning was God... Just some really heavy thoughts there
God spoke it with one word. Just gets my mind thinking.

hey kim!

i loved this post, as i cherish everything c. s. lewis
has written. his wit and amazing intellect paired
with his "non-religious" devotion to the Lord are
such an inspiration to me.

thank for the little tidbits, here, that i didn't know
about his life.

"a man can no more diminish the glory of God . . ."

i can't cut straight, either. don't think it has had
an adverse effect on my life, though! :)

love,
lea

Kim, you are in very deep thoughts in this blog and so passionate about literature. I always admire how well read you are. I see some truth in C.S.Lewis quotes. Thanks for sharing them.

I'm glad that you bring up these interesting people for me to go look up and learn about them. I haven't even read or seen the Chronicles or Nardia yet, can you believe but all my grand kids did. I'm way behind the time. JB

I love C.S. Lewis and have admired his writing for a long time. I took a class in college called Children's Literature...we analyzed The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It was so fun and fascinating. I didn't realize he died when JFK died. How interesting. Great post!!

I loved The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I often thought about reading it again as an adult - to see if it still intrigues me. Thanks for sharing those quotes and reminded me to get a copy of that book.

Lewis certainly had more influence on my life than the other two...thankfully! All the quote are fabulous, including the ones in comments. Lewis had a mine that was devised by God, so God would have someone to talk with on earth.

KIm, Hope this finds you feeling so much better, I have been gone today and am home tonight catching up.
I did so enjoy reading about your Thanksgiving experience in your previous post. I can t imagine how you survived, I guess you can laugh about it now. Talk about being tested and tried! lol Girl you all went through the fire. I am so glad you came through or I wouldn't be talking with you.lol
The pumpkin pie recipe I must try, as I love cream cheese,I have never had it in a pumpkin pie,and it sounds and looks delicious. I think that children who are home schooled get a better education especially when it comes to learning about how this great country was founded. I really like the books.

Your post today was wonderful, C.S. Lewis had a way with words. I didn't realize his death was at the same time as JFK's.
As always you bless me so much, and I hope you are rested.
I wish you so much love and blessings, this Thanksgiving .
Hugs,
Sue

Great quotes for Monday morning. Alas, I don't have any of his books here. Even all my Narnia books are still at your place, or I'd give them a shot today.

I didn't know he said those quotes. Those are cool.

I found another one in a childbirth book I've been reading,

"When pain is to be borne, a little courage helps more than much knowledge, a little human sympathy more than much courage, and the least tincture of the love of God more than all."

I love C.S.Lewis. The quote about the lunatic scribbling "darkness" is such a cool quote. BTW- I like the new lighter look on your blog. Have a good Monday! I used to hate them when I worked full time, but they don't have the same impact anymore. I guess I should never hate a day. To quote my employer, "Any day above ground is a good day!"

I work for Chuck Colson and have seen the pipe you're talking about. I must say, I'm quite envious of it. I told Mr. Colson one day, "If you ever realize the pipe is missing, go ahead and assume it was me." haha.

Excellent post!
