My Day at the Conference

Okay, I just want to say, I am not a photographer.
I take pictures of flowers because they stay still.
Me and people, well not to much. This is the first time
I kid you not, when I took pictures in public. I just
don't do that, I am much happier hiding in the background.
But, I kept telling myself, do it for the blog. It made me
brave, and that I got into my size 8 black jeans this morning.

I was pretty excited because I haven't wore them in a year or so.
So of course it was going to be a good day, when I can get into
jeans two sizes from what I have been wearing. But I digress.

We got there, had to park out in the boondocks. The conference
was held a Cal State Bakersfield. Which is real close to the house,
well closer than driving to LA or someplace like that.

Now because I stay away from politics because I talk religion enough
that I don't want to break any more of my Mom's rules of never
discussing religion and politics, I will refrain from commentary.
But lets just say, I used to be very political and at 52 I have become
jaded. I would rather see less talk and more action.
This is the inside of the tent.

This is looking one way and this next picture is
the other way because our table was in the middle.

I have never been in such a huge tent, and they fed this
whole group in 30 minutes. I was amazed at how they
did all of this so fast.
This picture next is from the top of the Ferris wheel.

That way you can see how big the grounds were.
I didn't take these pictures because I am so afraid
of heights I could not make myself turn around to take
them so my husband did. I make myself do things like
this like getting on the Ferris wheel but I was so afraid,
I couldn't let go to take the picture.
This is another part of the grounds.

This next picture I don't know if you can see very well
but those are flags loaned to Bakersfield from Pepperdine
University so that each flag was for each person that lost
their life On September 11th, 2001.

It was a good day, all of the snacks were free, like Starbucks,
water and soda and things like that. The bad part was
having to go find the outhouses. They were very nice
outhouses but still. At one point I went into this kind
that was on the back of a truck I think, well while I was
in there I could hear men clacking around underneath
me. That is kind of weird feeling hoping no one is
down there, then I could hear some more clanking and I
thought, " Oh know, what if they take this on the road and
I am stuck in here." I got out of there pretty fast and didn't
use that bunch again.

I do have to say, I love Jane Seymour, very sweet, lady who
has been through very hard things. I loved Mr. and Mrs Cheney
but my favorite hands down was Laura Bush. Because she was such
a classy lady and the thing I loved was telling a story on herself,
about when someone sent her a bobble-head of herself. She kept
it on the podium, sort of like a reminder to not take herself so seriously.
I would love to be a lady like that. She is just beautiful.

I really hate to say this, but they introduced Sarah Palin as the next
president of the United States. I don't want to offend anyone, but I
am not a fan. I also left when Karl Rove got up and spoke. I didn't
like him nor have I ever. I also missed Newt Gingrich. One of the best
speakers was the pilot who landed that plane in the Hudson.
What a wonderful neat man. It was a business conference so there
was a bunch about being in business. They also talked about what
they were doing and where they had to go when 911 happened.
There were lots more speakers and my brain is on overload. Saw the
guy that the movie Lean On Me is about. He was great. Then this guy
named Herb Cohen. He was different. I think he was good, I just felt
I missed his point. Maybe my ears had turned off by then.

We came home there was part two that started at 6:30 in the evening.
Ronnie Milsap was going to sing and do a concert and they had more speakers.
They were going to have fireworks at 11:00 pm but my head was already
ringing so I think I can see them from my house anyway, but I don't think
I will be awake.

I hope you have a nice Sunday. I am so glad to be home.

Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, for His wonderful works to the children of men!

What a huge conference and all of these on the line-up! I would have loved to have heard Sulley(?) speak. I really like his humility.
I've been out of the loop-didnt know Ronnie Milsap was still around. Enjoyed reading-Ilove your blog lay-out!

Hi Kim,
I'm glad you got to spend time with your husband and that you're home safe and sound. I do agree with you tho, I'm not a Sarah Palin fan, either. I think she's very pretty and dresses nice, but that's about as far as it goes for me. Have a restful Sunday :-)

What a day. I would have loved to hear Laura Bush and Sulley. (Palin - not so much) I have never seen a tent that large.
And thank hubby for taking the pics from the ferris wheel. (I probably wouldn't have let go either) :)

I think what blew me away most about this post was: you got on a Ferris Wheel??? Man, you DID live dangerously! :-) :-)

Thanks for the pics on the huge conference. You did so well in such a crowd to take photos. I'm 5"2'' and I know how difficult it is to take photos in a large crowd. Your photos are lovely and I zoomed on the flags and I can see the plainly. Your husband got a superb shot from the ferris wheel and you are a brave girl to get on the ferris wheel. JB

First of all...wow!!! on size 8, I am sure I haven't worn that size since after my fourth...so it has been 15 years! That would be a dream for me.
The conference sounds great...and you got to hear two TEXANS, Laura Bush and Sullenbeger (who is from a little city near us).
It sounds like a very interesting day...and inspiring!

A conference like that would be an interesting way to spend the day. I do like Laura Bush and Sully too.

Loved Ferris Wheels, and lots of roller coasters too, but my sis, husband, and daughter all prefer rides like a little taxi, or something without many stops, starts, bumps.

I really admire your courage to get on the Ferris Wheel! Now with back and hip problems, I will probably never again ride a roller coaster. But my life will continue to be fine without them. To everything there is a season.

I did send you an email, elegant dragonfly will be part of the address. You don't need to reply, and I can see you were very busy yesterday! Might have ended up in your spam folder tho...

congratulations on wearing those tiny jeans! :)

you know i adore laura bush, but i just loved the bobble
head story. it really takes a great deal of grace and
humility to do something like that.

if you will email me your home address, i found the
cutest little nothing to send you. lea.helmerich@gmail.com

Hi Kim, In my google friends if you click more at the top and then next at the bottom you are on the second page. I checked and I'm still following you too. I know I make myself crazy sometimes with this computer stuff. I really don't get it and it's by trial and error that I figure some of it out.

The conference looks like it was a great time. How wonderful to hear all the different speakers. I'm glad you got to have a nice day out with your husband.

Size 8 black jeans! That's too cool! Did you happy dance all over the place! That's Awesome!!! I'm going to do a happy dance for you!

Kim, hands down I love your photos. I agree with your comment "less words more action". I am so impressed that your could fit into size 8 jeans! I need some inspiration girlfriend, I would love to pack my size 12,s (yes I said 12) away! Such an interesting conference, I myself am not very political, however, I do always vote. Rove and Palin, ugg..........I bet you were happy to return to your own little piece of heaven! Autumn Blessings.

It sounds like a fun conference with lots of great speakers. Now I am curious about what Jane Seymour has been through!
