Happy Labor Day

Don't you think that Labor Day should be called,
Don't Labor Day, or Couch Potato Day, or
Last Day of Expensive Gasoline Day. But,
Labor Day makes me think I need to go to the hospital,
and bring home a baby day. I just never get it.
So, I went to handy-dandy Wikipedia.

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 6 in 2010).

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.[1] It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.[2] The September date was chosen as Cleveland was concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.[3] All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

So just in case you didn't know like I didn't know.
I was taking pictures of my Morning Glory, and I thought,
at least this picture will speak of this flowers glory. It was so
pretty and as hot as it was out there today, it probably didn't
make it past eleven in the morning. I wanted to show you my
new hens eggs. See how dark brown they are? The one that
looks almost white is really just a normal brown egg.
That is how dark the Cuckoo Marans and the Welsummers.

They are the sweetest little hens. I admit I love all of my
chickens, but this years batch are the sweetest chickens
I have ever had. I mean I think I have lovely chickens,
and the first batch was very sweet, but this batch, just
are the nicest bunch. On Saturday, my husband and I were
taking the dog for a walk, and we found raccoon tracks.
A big raccoon. It has sort of put me in a quandary, because I don't
know if my chicken pens could stand up to a raccoon.
I also found opossum tracks too. Wild animals must have
had a party Friday night.
The really weird thing is I don't really live out in the country.
I am less than five minutes from shopping centers. I live in this
little island of farms but town is built around us. Yes, across the street
is rural but that is all.
We have California quail and skunks and stuff like that, but it just makes
me wonder where all of these animals are coming from, oh and foxes,
I forgot about all of the foxes. Lots of foxes.

I was so happy to see this sunflower this morning.
My sunflowers are pretty tired but to find this one
was like finding a surprise.
I do love sunflowers.
Enjoy your day!

Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, for His wonderful works to the children of men!

(Psalm. 107:6)

"Couch Potato Day" sounds good to me! Or " BBQ Day" ! LOL!! I did not know the history behind the holiday, but am sure glad I don't have to work today!!
I live in the suburbs and we have all sorts of animals around here too. Fox, possums, owls, hawks, ground hogs, raccoons and deer. I have not seen any coyotes yet, but my neighbors just 3 blocks away have.
Your sunflower is beautiful!! And the morning glory too!

I vote for "Sleep in really late" day :) Also, Wickepedia left off the part about all wild animals forming their own holiday for Friday night pre human labor day to pilage and raise cain collectively.
I sure hope all your animals are safe. We have the same problems. When we got our Great Pyrenees it changed everything for the better.

Raccoons? Oh great, that's all you need. Who was it who had raccoons eat their chickens? Bee Haven?

Anyway, happy Labor Day to you, too! I plan to celebrate by cleaning house. Talked to the in-laws last night, who said they gave us a tortilla press. I tore my cabinets apart this morning, and I don't actually seem to have one. So now I have to clean up the mess. :-)

Oh, also, Cake Wrecks did a tribute to Labor Day, except, like, being in labor. These cakes are so horrifically ugly!

I like "Last Day of Expensive Gasoline Day". That would be awesome. I'm just glad we have an extra day off. I love the dark brown chicken eggs. They are so gorgeous.

How about Travel day - I think that's what most people did around me this weekend - no resting from labor - that's for sure. I love color brown eggs .. it reminds me of the good old days!

I like "Couch Potato Day". I was really surprised to read that you are five minutes from a shopping center! With all your flowers, fruits, veggies, chickens, etc. I imagined you lived way, way, way out in the country on a 100 acre farm! It sounds like you have the best of both worlds with farm life and city life close together! Very, very cool! I also love the color of those brown eggs!

Hi Kim,
So glad to visit tonight, I enjoyed reading this info. which i didn't know. Thanks for sharing.
That Morning glory, is one of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen. I don't think i have seen a blue striped one. and I am so envious of those eggs. I don't know what is wrong with my chickens, I get an egg here and there. I told my dh, it is probably because we have had to have them penned up because, of fox, raccoons, and opossums too. I feel so sorry for them. We are planning to set some traps this week. i am so tired of feeding the neighborhood around here. I think they must have gone out and told every wild creatures within fifty miles. LOl
Have a great evening.
Hugs,
Sue

Hi Kim,
I myself know all too well what a constant worry varmits are when you have chickens. Since 2 of mine were killed by raccoons a couple of years ago, my husband and I now take separate cars if we're going to a party or cookout so that one of us can leave before it gets dark to lock the chickens in their house for the night. To some it may seem like a hassle, but once you have chickens and just fall head over heels for them, it's no bother at all. Besides, it gives me a good excuse to leave if I'm not having a good time ;-)
