Could It Be Fall?

I got up this morning and it was cloudy. It smelled
like rain, just a bit and there was the smell of brown leaves.
It is hard to describe the smell of brown leaves, but it
is a tiny bit like dirt, and humus and leaves. Living in
California, I am by September tired of abundant
sunshine. That is what the weather report always
says, abundant sunshine. I am ready for some weather.
I like weather.

I was sitting outside, last night. The windows were open
and the air conditioners off. My son was sitting at the piano
playing sometimes the songs that live in my soul.
I wondered how it is that he knows what to play when I am
sitting outside. The dogs are at my feet.
The sky has turned purple and there is a faint outline of
the sun setting, as the last of the light fades from the sky.

There are killdeers flying up above and crying the plaintive
cry. I see a very large flock of geese flying overhead. I realize they
are racing the sun. I think it is the largest flock I have seen in a long
while. I watched as the V shape changed as the leader fell back
and was replaced by a new one.

As I am sitting there I am aware of a shadow silently,
walking toward me. I think I hear the sound of the grass
and her little cat feet before I see the white bib glowing in
the last of the light. It is the cat, who would rather
stay outside all night than come into the house.
She talks to me as I pick her up and put her in the garage.
It makes me wonder at all that she sees as she is crouched
in the weeds. Pretending she is a jungle cat waiting for
her prey.

I am glad fall is almost here. I am glad that it will be time
to wear long pants, and sweatshirts and watch the fire
glowing in the fire place. I will be glad that the garden
will be gone and in its place clean dirt waiting for the dreams
of next year.
Have a lovely Tuesday.

Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, for His wonderful works to the children of men!

(Psalm. 107:6)

Hooray for fall! I'm sitting here in the morning with the air from the open door freezing my legs. Fall weather means long walks that don't kill me from the heat!

Yeah, I am looking forward to breathing again without pain. My lungs feel like they are full of water.
I have to go take the dog for a walk now and it will be nice to freeze. Have a great day!

Kim, I saw you on my dear friend Florence's blog (Essences of the Past)and had to come visit you. I love this story that you did, it really spoke to my heart...even the part about putting your sweet cat in the garage ( I do the SAME thing too, I won't go to bed until he comes in). What a lovely way to describe the evening, I will be back! I'm adding you to my sidebar too ;-) Lisa

Hi Kim,
First of all, thanks so much for the nice post to my blog. In answer to your question, yes, the book I had been reading (just finished) "Just Who Will You Be?" is very good. And it's short too. You could finish in 2 hours, no problem. Anyhoo, I love Fall too. I, too, have a cat who crouches in the bushes near the bird feeder and unfortunately, have found remnants of little birdies that obviously weren't on their game and paying attention to their surroundings. But what can you do? It's nature. Have a great day.

PS... I grew up in California, but we didn't have many farms close by in Pasadena. Now I'm in Texas, another world entirely!

I think that it has been such a hot summer, we are all ready for the fall and all it brings. It's nice to take a break from picking vegetables at last and see the nice earth ready for next year. JB

I'm looking forward to fall arriving too. It's actually a little cooler here today too. Not fall weather exactly, but cooler than it's been :-)
Very nice and thoughtful post.
Blessings,
Marcia
